creaking noise coming from BB

I have noticed over the past few comutes a noiseing coming the BB area on my bike. It'd hard to describe but it is as if bearings are falling on each other as i turn the crank (hope that explains it) the noise stops as soon as I stop peddaling. I have checked the clearance on the deauralier and it is fine.
Any ideas what this might be. It doesn't seem to be afftecting the performace but it is a little bit annoying.
It doesn't always happen sometimes i can pedal and there is no noise but it is becoming louder and more often.
The bike is fairly new and has only covered 350 miles so far so I guess it shouldn't be bearings.
Any help would be appreciated.

If the BB is cheapand poorly sealed it could be the bearings - especially if you have cycled through winter and had a few soakings without mudguards.
Mine recently failed after approx 1000 miles and I was a bit put out by that. That represents just 9 weeks of riding and I expect parts to last longer than that.
Your options are as follows;
- remove, clean, lube and reassemble the BB. This might cure the creaking.
- if it does not, then purchase a new one and replace.
The process only take about 20 minutes once you have done it once, you will need to make sure that you have the correct BB tool for the job.

well i never managed to locate the noise so went to the LBS and it appears the bearings have gone in the rear hub and cassette body.
luckily still under warranty so two new wheels on the way.
hopefully back on the road this weekend.0
