Has anyone here any experience of taking bikes on trains in Sweden?

I would LOVE to take part in the Vätternrundan one year but my only option of getting there is by plane and train. I would ideally be using a hard/solid bike case.

I don't think you'll have any problem - unless the train is full of bikes. I did the Vattern last year and took by bike in a case. I had a lift between Stockholm and Motala, but used the Arlanda Express to get between the airport and Stockholm central station. Plenty of room there.

The Swedish rail web site is http://www.sj.se/. Motala is about 3 hours away from Stockholm by train. I would have thought a bike case would be OK as normal luggage, but if in doubt, then drop them an email or phone them - they won't have a problem with English. You will have to book early, though, as the train will be popular with 17,000 cyclists trying to get to Motala.

You could do what I did in 2006 and ride the event (hassle free) courtesy of Cyclists Fighting Cancer. See http://www.cyclistsfc.org.uk/vatternrundan.html for details.
