alcohol no more...

I personally would not go for something that tasted like something I was trying to give up - how about ginger beer?

I have never wanted to give up alcohol, I have just grown to dislike the hangovers so much that my consumption has gone down to nearly nil, but I did give up caffeine and grew to like all the other hot drinks you can have withour resorting to decaf coffee / tea

before I say any more I just want to make it absolutely clear that I am not judging, assuming or any more should be read into what I say than my simple experience:

My elder brother is an alcoholic and my eldest brother is now dry as he saw himself going the same way, and they BOTH just stopped. They don't look for alternatives they just drink soft drinks.

If you look for substitutions that's what they are, and really all you are doing is extending the habit. I noted your use of the word 'habit'

If you are drinking at home alone then you need to find alternate activities that fill the gaps, and if you drink to excess when socialising then you need to break the circle and enjoy a night out without alcohol.

Both require will-power though and there are people around who can help.

My advice though is not look for alternates, just sort out the root cause and deal with that
