Am I missing something but this device on Amazon is about £100 cheaper than anywhere else. I know it doesn't come with detailed maps but this is a good price, right?

  • That one doesn't have the speed/cadence sensor or as you say any useful mapping such as the City Navigator. I'm very tempted to get one soon though.

I've got a 305 and find the cadence sensor invaluable. So think about getting that as well
  • Bought mine 6m ago for £256, now at £258 from http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php/905/garmin-edge-705-heart-rate-monitor---speed-cadence including HRM & cadence sensor.

Thanks everyone. Box contents does say it includes HRM but no cadence sensor.

Also worth remembering that some packages include mapping over and above the installed (and apparantly useless) basemap. This adds to the price again.

They are not the equivalent.....They ARE Sat navs for bikes.

Except that satnavs for bikes don't really work since usually you want to go a particular way from A to B and not just the fastest/shortest. Getting the most out of a 705 relies on pre-planning a route unless you don't care about either blasting up A roads all the time or alternatively taking ridiculous detours to avoid even a 100 metre stretch of A road.

If you try to use a 705 as you would a satnav in a car I suspect you'll be very disappointed....

I'm off out on the bike tomorrow and will be using the Garmin 705.....will possibly get 25 or so miles from home and then see where I end up if I tell it to get me home....I usually use it for recording training and the only navigation has been done on pre-planned routes.

Ive been sticking to the same routes for years - maybe because I don't get much time - and just want to get the miles/hills in.

Not really bothered about HRM or Cadence - whats the cheapest I could get one of these route planners up and running for ?
  • As I posted above, I bought mine 6m ago for £256, now at £258 from http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php/905/garmin-edge-705-heart-rate-monitor---speed-cadence including HRM & cadence sensor.

They do it about £235 without the cadence sensor. http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php/904/garmin-edge-705-heart-rate-monitor

I found it brilliant when riding in France at the back of last year, in the foothills of the Pyrenees. No idea where I was going but helped plan some interesting routes without getting lost.

You will have to factor in the cost of maps, either in SD card or DVD. The base map is useless.

  • Im scraping together the money at the moment for one of these.... are these maps any good??

Has anyone one tried the Nokia N96 as a cycle GPS unit? Just interested to know if it holds the signal OK and what your views on it are.

Best thing about the 705 is the simplicity of just having one head unit and one wireless senser.

Paid £270 6 mths ago from expanys (now £296) which included a speed senser.
