ouuucchhhhhh :(

ever since the gig on friday, my right knee has been killing :(

its my right knee, on the inside of my leg but below my knee cap. 3 times now its felt like it was going bend backwards, and all I was doing was standing still.

I don't really have access to a doctor (unless I got hospital) as i'm not registered round here :(

Not sure what I can do, but i'm in a bit of pain atm :( (plus I have the flu which isn't helping - I can't stop shaking).

Are there any exercises I can do to strengthen my knee up a bit?
or does deep heat/freeze spray work well in the knee area?

B

Really need to see a doctor. Sounds like ligament damage so you shouldn't really exercise till it's diagnosed and treatment is offered. If you feel your knee is up to it swimming and cycling (road) are both low impact on the knee joint.

Most surgeries will allow you an emergency consultation even if you are not registered - give them a call!

Really? Damn I didn't know that!

Just noticed that one of my old scars on my knee has split a bit... wonder how that's happened!

You really need to go an see a doctor. I'm sure a lot of knee-injury veterans can tell you the kind of exercises we've had to do as physio, but until you know exactly what's wrong, you might end up doing more harm than good.

If there's swelling, I don't think there's any harm in taking ibuprofen (unless you have a stomach ulcer), or applying Knee Peas (TM). But that'd just be dealing with the symptoms rather than the cause.

Here's a couple of articles on knees mate. Don't if they'll help or not!?

You could always go straight to a physio's and make an appointment privately. Most of them charge around £30-£50 for 30 mins with them and they'd be able to tell you whats what!

  • Aye, I may have to go see a different physio :( I know of one that I can go to, but its something like £60 for your first session, then £30 after that...4 sessions minimum :( just don't have the cash atm :(

Bck home I see a certain doctor and also have a physio to look over my knee every now and then. I'm back in a few weeks so I may try and hold of till then.

i seriously dmaged the cartlidge in my right knee playing rugby when I 18 :( already had 2 bouts of keyhole surgery.

Its a bit better today, still sore, but I've had no swelling (as far as I can tell). got some ibuferin gel on it which seems to have helped.

I agree, sounds like its possible that your knee is unstable.

Register with your GP (we're generally a friendly bunch :) ) and you can be referred to orthopaedics if any damage to the ligaments/ physio if you're not interested in surgical options. Physio after surgery is so very important too.

Generally speaking your knee is best assessed when (if there is any) the swelling has gone down.

As long as you have no contraindications to ibuprofen (or any other non steroidal anti-inflammatories), you will find tablets much better than gel.

Gel is difficult to use in the right dosage and does not get absorbed as well.

    Get well soon!

  • Tis feeling a tad better today, i've been ill with (man)flu since sunday/monday and haven't really moved... usually gets better when i go for a short road ride/walk (went for a walk today).

seeing as though there is a GP in the house... I've herd of shin splints, but i sometimes get a loudish cracking (not knee clicking) when crouching, but its def not my knee. could it be a similar thing but just below the knee?
(sometimes I have to crouch randomly to "click" my knees and release some pressure in there, otherwise they can get quite painful)

Also, is it true that some road cycling would do me some good and keep the joints lubricated and moving easier?

    Sorry about all the Q's

Ben - that does sound pretty bad. Change physios and find one that really specialises in sports injuries.
  • she's a full on sports re-hab/physio, and a very good one. Just I haven't been for about 2 years due to uni

I've just booked a physio appointment to check out my knee. It's been aching for a few weeks now around the front of the knee, had a couple of weeks off the bike and it felt better, went back out again on Sunday and it's come back again this week.

Went to a bike shop today and the guy took a quick look at my riding position and told me I need to lower the saddle a little and that my feet are too far apart. He said "change your pedals" - I just have because I thought the extra float in the Times would help  He said a proper fitting is 2 hours and is £120

    Bloody knee!
  • well i've got my 1st proper ride tomorrow, so i'll see how I cope. I'm really pissed off tho cus I can't find my damn knee support anywhere :(

walked to Uni today and it was...alright... but was stiff this morning. if i get any pain tomorrow i'll just sack it and go see a physio :(

Have you read this month's MBUK? It had a review of the Asterisk's knee braces. They look well impressive - proper robo-knees. Lookee

    Sadly, they're also £600 for a pair.

    Bugger.
  • waaaay too expensive :( sadly, my knee will look like that on the inside soon!

Went to swinley today, and my knee is beyond fu[ked...its killing. got a load of ice on it (actually its a bag of black forest fruit ). might go see the doctor, but not till wednesday, cus I think thats the drop in :(

Def getting some gears on the bike.... as much as I enjoyed the SS, I think for my knees sake i'd better get some :(

For icing, I highly recommend a bag of frozen peas. The tiny wondrous knee peas mould their way around the joint. Lovely. Although black forest fruit might also do the trick, but it's probably harder to avoid them getting eaten. I don't think a black forest gateau would work though.

I've just watched Iron Man again, it's made me really want those knee braces. :(

I've been off the bike for 9 weeks now. I badly sprained both knees while mud-plugging on the mountain bike.

I made the mistake of trying to self diagnose, and of trying to exercise as soon as the pain started to drop. All I did was knock the healing process back to square one after 4 weeks.
My GP will only give anti-inflammatories and do some cursory standard checks for busted ligaments or cartilage. I can't take Ibuprofen due to asthma so I'm stuck with that rubbish gel. Oh, and the GP will tell you to rest it - totally useless if like me your job involves going between two floors 15 times a day.

I'm going back in the next couple of days and asking for referral to a physio.

I know now that I have to put this in the hands of someone that knows what they're doing. A GP is too much of a generalist, and the internet will eventually convince you that knee pain means you're a wombat.

Cycling is one of the most important things in my life - For god's sake don't bugger about like I have. Start bashing alarm bells.
