  • Was this at a British Cycling approved event? If so i'd be getting your dad to get in touch and have this reported. Unfortunately at your age, like in most sports, it's already a dog eat dog world. Parents will do anything to get their child in the spotlight, I saw this loads when I was on Derby County's books as a young teen.

This is not what the sport is about though, this is blatant cheating. Usually the race starter is the only person to issue instructions to ALL the entrants before the start of the race is signalled. This normally involves the rules, particular hazards and passing/overtaking etiquette.

  • Thats totally out of order! What a responsible Dad he is.

Chalk it down to experience, get some mid-week miles in and then kick his ass good style at the next race

We don't have all the facts, but is it possible you are over-reacting? Was the Marshall really "coaching" this guy or just talking you all round the track? You could all hear what he was saying so I guess there was no secret knowledge about the course being shared? Did the guy who was being coached win? If he did, I doubt it was because he learned something from the session about breathing that you didn't? It wasn't actually his kid he was coaching, so why would he be favouring him? You don't say that he coaxed him along during the race If you are local, maybe you felt you had an advantage knowing the course already and that advantage was lost with the pre-race tour of the track with tips. Mayeb the marshall felt that everyone needed to be aware of the hazrds on the course beforehand? If someone had been injured on a bad part of the course a lot of praent would have complained that no-one warned the kids about that spot!

Try not to get hung up on stuff like this. Its fitness, talent, will-to-win that are the main deciders in races. If he did beat you and you're annoyed about this, then channel that in to making yourself more determined in your training and racing to win. Good luck.

Before the race one of the marshalls stood next to me and told me that we would first do a ride round the circuit just to get familiar with it.He would guide us round

Was this guided lap the race? or did you do a guided lap and then do a race?

If this was the race then its cheating.

If the race was held after the guided lap then ignore my first post, i've misunderstood your original post.

the race did actually start straightaway and the marshall tucked in behind the other boy and started egging him on-thats when i realised the guy had lied saying we were only doing a pre-race lap
Yes i am familiar with the ground but not with people who lie.Got some groing up to do,yep.
don't get me wrong,i'm certainly not hung up about it.Its good to see what fellow riders feel about a carry-on like this.
The race wasn't a proper recognized event however it did take place the same weekend as the DAWN RAID.If you don't know about the DAWN RAID then you should definitely find out about it.It's held at The Highland Wildcat trail at Golspie,Sutherland.
  • So were you riding under the assumption that the 'race' was actually just a guided sighter?

If you were led to believe you were just doing a recce and it turned out to be the race then that is bang out of order I'd say.

If the race had started, then the marshal had no right to be riding on the track. Marshals are appointed to fixed points, namely turns or tricky descents to see the riders get down safely, and should be on foot.

It is usual for xc races to allow practice laps, usually within specific times between races, to enable the riders to see the course and pick their lines, etc.

When I have ridden SXC practice laps, the rules insist that riders must have number plates to allow them onto the circuit. Even ordinary members of the public are asked to leave the course for their own safety.
Races should also start at a given time, and it is your responsibility to see that you are in position on the start line ready.

In that case, it's definately out of order.

Well done for rising above it like that, hopefully you realise that he's even more of a loser than if you'd beat him fair and square.

Im pretty sure whoever is posting this isnt 12! I wish I could paragraph like that and I'm 23!!!!

I certainly wouldn't refer to my dad as 'my father' and 'my dad' in the same paragraph unless I was in the 17th century
