just noticed a few cuts on old red's tires, at what sort of size would it be prudent to get a new tire? on the town bike i'd ignore them, but the tires on that bike are 4 times heavier and quite strong while these are lighter faster...

When the cuts go right through the outer and you get frequent punctures
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

You could always try supergluing them, if the gashes arn't too big. Never experienced it myself, but I heard that if you get slashes on the side-walls they're v. dangerous and should be replaced, if they're on the top bit (the bit in contact with the road) then a bit of glue can sort it out: works for me anyway.
