Is there a way I can wash my Specialised Radiant gloves before I put them away until autumn? They are beginning to impart a certain... odour de road to my hands, and besides they're too warm really for commuting now.

I asking because they've got the thinsulate stuff in, and all the reflective piping etc; I'd just turn them inside out and do them at 30, but they're dead comfy and I don't want to bollocks them. 8)

(ps I did do a search!)

  • 1. Hot wash (60 degrees). Might not do them too much good.
    2. microwave them for 30 seconds (ditto)
    3. freeze them for a couple of days (may not work).
    4. use an odourless anti-bacterial spray on them.

The smell is* the end result of of bacteria breaking down stuff in your sweat. If you don't kill the bugs, the smell won't go away.

*I assume it is, anyway. You don't carry home wet fish in your gloves, do you?

Ah ha, alright smelly hands Greg?
  • Once again, Jash, no, you may not smell my fingers. Not this time, not never.

Actually, no, I don't having washcloth finger pong syndrome.

I borrowed some ski gloves from a mate about 20 years ago, and Jayzuz, those things could run around the room like something from the Addams Family. I did a bit a research and gathered a wealth of knowledge.

I used to ride year round without socks. That led to a some absolutely minging bike shoes. And bloody cold toes. Same principle.

I had to burn the shoes. One of them managed to escape, hopping his fiery footprints over horizon...

    :lol::lol:

Btw, no, no fish in my gloves. So far.

Might try the 60 degree wash then... They'll be inside out for ages, completely dry, if that helps? Or will they just start to hum the moment I put them on again?
  • If you kill the bugs, you'll be ok. If not, people will shun you. Again.

Remembered another one. Make up a 3x recommended concentration of Milton's solution. Maybe stronger (if it goes through the fabric, it's too strong. Stop immediately). Leave to soak for a few hours. Rinse thoroughly. Unless you've always wanted to find out what dermatitis is like.

Where are our resident chemists? Presumably, as it's Friday afternoon, they're setting light to lengths of magnesium, melting testtubes, superheating metal tripods and whacking them under the cold tap, and lighting the tap for the bunsen burners. Tsk tsk.

Either that or they're already in the pub, boring the staff to tears and lending credence to the landlord's homicidal fantasies...

My kids are attracted by most things grubby or smelly, but they don't go within five yards of my gloves if they see them.

"What happens when the hammer goes down, kids?"
    "It stays down, Daddy."
    "Exactly."

    Yes, yes, very good. :?

And no, you *still* may not smell my hands. Don't make me get the injunction out again...

  • I wash my gloves on a 30 degree wash, in a little protective bag thing, about every two or three weeks when I'm wearing them regularly.

    You smelly-handed weirdos.

Also, if you do suffer from chronic stink-hand, maybe consider gloves with silks/inners, like the assos gloves of many layers that make you look like danny devito in that batman film....

Oh, FFS. This is like Morcombe & Wise. But with two straight guys.

I DO NOT HAVE SMELLY HANDS OR GLOVES!

In the interests of veracity I will be offering a hand/glove smelling booth on the Embankment this evening. All proceeds to charidee.

    .

My hands don't actually smell, per se. They just seem like they could. Does that make sense?

Lets all point at tardie for he/she is a FREAK

Solution = more gloves and don't keep them very long, stinky! :P
Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.
  • Methinks he doth protest too much.

Methinks that phrase was coined by* the Thickie Brothers having repeated over and over their wrong-headed meanderings in the face of proof to the contrary, and being confronted with what they found to be the inexplicable rage of frustration of normal people directed at the stubbornness of the resolutely dim.

*I am aware of the origins of the phrase.

Phew! what's that smell? it seems to be leaking across the Internet, can you please NOT wear those gloves while you post :P

The very question I keep forgetting to ask on here before I go and wreck them by just chucking them in the washing machine.

They're going round on a 30 degree synthetic wash as I write.

    We shall see.

    An update would be nice!

I know the mitts are pretty much bombproof, but these are the first winter gloves that have lasted an actual whole winter...

They survived the wash. Don't know how germ-free they are but they're several shades cleaner. I hope Monday's not too cold cos I don't think they'll be dry by then.

I smelt my gloves the other day, (from about four feet way) so I've chucked them and brought a pair of new ones (gore tex, very nice they are too).

I couldn't face washing the old ones once more, it took me about two days to get all the inner lining back in the right place.

    You didn't say which year...

If they're anything like my old gloves I presume you meant Monday 2010.

Oh, ye of little faith! A weekend hanging by the radiator and they're dry this morning. And clean. And very comfortable. Bit too warm this morning though.

I like the smell of my minging mitts, also my own pharts.

    Don't say you don't.

Would think any modern glove worth its salt should be able to go in a normal machine wash.

Walking (!) home the other day, I found an Altura glove in the gutter, completely filthy, grimy soaked through and probably run over by traffic for who knows how long. Looked binable but I took it home (in a plastic bag) and gave it a normal wash cycle. Result: one brand new looking/feeling spare glove.

That reminds me of the time when I saw a bag of chips on the pavement outside MacDs. They'd been walked on a couple of times, and I think the corner of the bag had been nibbled by something, but I gave them a bit of a wipe and most of the muck came right off. Almost good as new. Yum yum!

I'm going to take a really wild stab in the dark here, but you're not married, are you?

Now, what are you going to do with one odd glove?

    Ewwwwww!

Who knows where that glove had been?
