How do you make the cables do their job?

I put the cables through my bike and got the brakes workin but both derailers are sittin there like a brick of cheese! help me figure this out please!

    Put the gears levers in the loosest configuration - if you have the cables attached it's pretty easy to tell - if they are sti's then just click the small button a couple of times until they don't go any more.

    Then thread the cables through so there is a little tension in them - they won't be tight but shouldn't be flapping around - and tighten the bolts.

    After that you use the threaded cable stops to get the tension right so that the gears will change.
    I'm left handed, if that matters.
