Need some advice,

Brought a Mail order bike because i liked the frame with the view to upgrading all the crappy stock parts. So far i have put a new headset, stem, handlebar, seat post, seat, bottom bracket, crank set & rear derailur.
At present i have got pretty much bog standard dual-control shifters and as with the rest of the bike, i would like to upgrade them. The only problem being that my bike is a 7 speed while all the decent d-control shifters are 9 speed. Is it possible for me to still use these shifters or does it have to be specific to a 7 speed cassette & can anyone recommend one to me.

9spd will not work. the spacings/cable pull is different.

8spd has the same spacing and you can just not use one click.

But more info on make model etc required.

  • New bikes with 7-speed cassettes were sold from 1989 to 1993 during the 7-speed era. Nowadays, only cheap bikes have 7 speeds and these are fitted with freewheels not cassettes.

Converting to 9-speed makes a lot of sense.
