gear jumping with raleigh international 2002

my gears often jump when going up hills and applying some pressure on the peddles, jumping from easier to harder gears. Is this a problem with raleigh 2002 internationals? I have taken it to be repaired a few times and each time something different is adjusted but it still jumps. It seems like the jumping is not good for the knees and could even throw them out of socket. It doesn;t happen with every gear, just with the gears towards the larger end of sprokets and mostly when going up hills. Any advice? Thanks.

    it shouldn't be anything to do with the raleigh as it most likely uses off the shelf campag or shimano components.

    have you tried tweaking the gears with the barrel adjuster yourself? brake and gear cables do stretch a bit over time so you might find that they need adjustment. if the bike has been used a lot then the chain and cassette might need replacing, but as you have had it looked over a few times i would have expected them to have picked that up.

    Campagnolo Centaur is the deraileur brand. Barrel adjuster, brake and gear cables and chain and deraileur have all been inspected and/or worked on. The bike repair person says this type of gear set up is rather delicate, needing regular check ups, unlike a more rugged bike. He has suggested perhaps getting new gear equipment, an upgrade of a couple of steps so to speak,

    :? Centaur is upper/mid level componentry it is certainly not more delicate then its more expensive brethren which is how I would take an upgrade. If it is not worn out then I suggest you try a new bike mechanic, Centaur is a rugged mech. Your issues are more likely your cables are either worn or in need of tuning. The Park tools site is a good source of basic (and not so basic) maintenance tips. Adjusting mechs is not difficult.

    Check your cassette on the rear for broken or bent teeth, and as Bugly said find a new bike mechanic. If they can't fix it after a few visits they are obviously missing something and you need a second opinion.

    Thanks for all the very helpful advice. I'll take it to another bike shop. Actually, an awesome one has just started in my city, the guy makes high level custom bikes and I hear he is very helpful and willing to take time out for minor stuff like mine!

    i took it to another mechanic and they say chain and cassette need replacing. So that will be done!
