Hello,

Today I'm going to my LBS to get the following for my ride on Friday.

- 2 x 26" presta inner tubes, is there a brand I should look for? (cheap please)
- 1 x XC style helmet, again, any brands I should look for? (looking at around £30)
- 1 x All year round lube, no idea what to get here.
- 1 x Gunk aerosol degreaser if they have it, if not i'll got to halfrauds.

I think that is all. Can you think of anything else I will need? I have almost nothing bike wise. Other than this awesome tool here that my dad got me. http://www.topeak.com/products/Tools/He ... lowW_O_Bag and we also have a pump.

I've also been told that good food for energy, for biking. Is the holy Fig Rolls. Is there a drink I should look out for aswell? I'm so glad fig rolls are good for this as that gives me an excuse to eat many. :D

Thanks a lot. You people on BikeRadar have been so forgiving about my lack of bike knowledge,

Matt

  • tubes - anything that fits usualy unless you want expencive, light XC ones or thick DH ones.

helmet - giro, met, bell, specialised are the main brands

Giro indicator, hex, whatever fits you.

Finish line lube is my preference

    Gunk is great stuff.

    Puncture repair kit?

  • Ineer tubes, I carry the cheapest I can find (halfords usually) when Iam out as its only a make do till I get home. Found that you canget some good deals on specialized one on ebay.

Lube, Finish line wet lube all the way.

Helmets. Try before you buy,I found bell to best fit with the rotalock system.

Okay. Forgot to get the Lube & the degreaser. I didn't know which lube would be best, and they didn't have gunk.

Got the Giro indicator in the end. £34.99. In red to match my bike.

    Also got 2 x Bontrager inner tubes. £10 (that's £5 each)

Then bought another skewer set as the rear one from Evans wasn't long enough. £12.99

Then a 20% discount on all of that because my mate that I was with knows them in the shop.

    Good deal really.

Going to get some Gunk aerosol either tomorrow or Thursday, and I'll try and pick up some lube some time before the ride.

  • kenda ones are cheap on ebay, 10 of them for 20 quid for presta so amybe less for schraeder. the giro indicator is good, protects your head well (mine saved my life after an over the bars onto my head). As for the lube i have no clue, there was a topic on it. Some of that virosol stuff people were on about, i'm going to get some and put it into a kitchen cleaner spray bottle

i had an indicator before my hex and it was spot on for fit and style (which i think is very importnt with helmets, if it looks cr@p, you wont wear it)

that topeak tool is outstanding, i have it too and have since i started riding (nearly 3 yrs ago with a saracen) and it has never missed a beat, the chain tool is spot on, the allen keys are very accurate and the tyre levers are very tough.

  • was looking at a topeak alien but they're a bit expensive and some of the jobs that it can do you will harly ever need done out on the trails and if you do you'll want to be in a dry garage with it in a workstand and a full toolkit, i'll probably buy a topeak mini 18 instead

  • Thanks, was looking at a couple of the crank bro's and park tools equivalent but the topeak one looks better and doesn't have too many tools that you won't need

Yeah, I mean, when you look at the tyre levers on the Topeak, it looks like plastic and you could snap it easy. But once you've held the thing, and tried to snap it... Phwoar! Engineering grade plastic. Same for the body, but the tools themselves are hardened steel.

i agree about the levers, they are absolutely solid, ive used them pretty much fro every tyre chnge i have done in 3 yrs and they are spot on.

the tools are all very good too, the 8mm is even good enough for removing crank bolts, not bad for a mini tool id say.
  • yep, topeak seem to make the best multitools around and that ratchet rocket thing looks pretty good but is a bit expensive
