Some prefer Shimano, some prefer Sram.
What are the specs of the kit you're looking at (one may be of a better quality than the other)

They are the same.
There is no big difference in performace, so shifters and deraillurs
at the same level from both manufactures will perform roughly equal.0 -

i would disagree, x9 shifters and x0 mech is much better than xtr shifters and xtr ,mech in my experience.
infact, x7 shifters and x9 mech shifts better than xtr+xtr set up.
ps. i have all 3 set ups, all 3 are perfectly tuned and working as they should.0 -

X9 and X9 on the Idrive, did have XT shifters and XTR mech on the Zaskar, now dual LX shifters.
It is personal preference. X9 too clunky, shifts like the cheap acera on my old Saracen, I like smooth clicks.0 -
what you call clunky, i call positive (and mine isnt particularly "clunky" anyway)
what you call smooth, i call vague
but as you say, its all a matter of preference.
ps. my x9, x0 and xtr is the most recent versions of each0 -
