first, im a computer mong, i know very little and only use it to come online.

my connection is very intermittent. i have my own wireless connection and even when the lights remain illuminated on the router my laptop will sometimes disconnect. when this happens, it will not reconnect until i restart the laptop and sometimes i have have to restart the router. all this happens whilst the connection lights remain lit on the router.

does anyone have any tips to make my connection more stable. this disconnection thing happens atleast once a day, often it happens 5 or 6 times and i am wondering if there is summat i can do .

There are channels on a router, for example 1-13; change to a different one from what you are on now as someone else in the area may be using the same channel to you.

You could also buy a hi-gain aerial from Ebay for a fiver which would increase the range or place the router in a more strategic position so as to get a better connection.

On most routers you can access them via your internet browser on: http://192.168.0.1 and by simply keying in a username and password.

    Hope this helps! :?
  • If the above does not help then check the router's website for firmware updates and also check for newer drivers on your laptop.

How far from the router to the laptop? How old's the router / laptop?

Doesn't sound like simply signal drop out though, more like software problems on the laptop / router. I have a PC in the garage (yes I know  ) and the signal drops out quite a bit (better now with a new high gain aerial on the router) due to the distance and number of walls between the router and PC. When the signal comes back up the connection is just there.

Obvious things to try are a Firmware upgrade (software on the router) and to rinstall any drivers for the wireless reciever on the laptop. Or (and I prefer this option, also applies to bike bits obviously  ) new router and laptop time. It'll be easier in the long run.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result
