Looking to buy a new bike for wifey rather than replace all the parts on my old Saracen.
We want to buy the bike on JE James cheque spread deal (9 months interest free) so are kinda stuck to the stock they have.
Been looking through their site and they have a Giant Arete 2 08 model for £469 down from £695 - so a bit of a deal.
http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/id39871.html
Looking through the spec list it all looks good stuff - RS Tora 302, XT Shadow rear mech etc.
Gonna go look at one later today in our LBS, but does anyone have experience of them etc, as there are no reviews on here that I can find.

Looks a good buy for less than 500 quid! I wouldn't say it was worth 700, but makes a lot of sense at 500.
I've not seen a review, but can bertainly vouch for the parts fitted, all solid dependable stuff. Hopefully JE James will let your other half have a quick blast on it.0 -
Thats the trouble super, we dont live anywhere near (Brighton), so can't try it out, and all out LBS dont have any in stock so we cant see it either!0

Sort of my LBS, are a good shop.
Any decent shops closer to where you are? I should think that spec could be found on other bikes.0 -
Tried the two local Giant dealers and both don't have stock.
Any other bikes you can recommend for that kinda price point that are on their site?
Looked at Spec Myka but the spec didnt look as good as the Giant0 -
I think the Arete will be the best specced WSD you will get for that money. GT Avalanches also good for the money, and don't discount the Carrera Fury, though this will need tweaking for a woman.0

Arete is basically the womens version of the XTC,so its a good bike.Spec is pretty good too.2006 Giant XTC

Whats the wheelset like on this bike - Deore Hubs, Alex DP-17 rims?
Would the bike be much better if the wheelset was swapped for a set of DT420SL rims with Deore / Specialized hubs?
Am sure some people will see where I am going with this one......
.p.s. my Stumpy has said wheelset as standard....0 -
Alex make good quality rims, and this is no exception, a well made budget offering. Slightly weighty for an XC rim, 50g more than the DT420, which is of similar profle.
The Spesh hub possibly slightly better.0 -
Given mY own experience of Spesh hubs and Deore I`d stick with Deore.
If you want a better wheelset, see if the shop will do a deal for an upgraded set at time of purchase,or sell them straight away on ebay /classifieds and offest the money to buy a better set from Merlin.2006 Giant XTC

did you spot the small text at the bottom of my post....
...my current bike has the DT wheelset, which I could swap onto wife's bike and buy myself some new ones  (any excuse!)0 -

Ordered the Arete today - should be here mid-week next week so will post my findings then...0

Arete means "stop" in French - might not sell too well over there!!0
-
Giant disagree:
"French for “ridge crest,” Arête is equally bold and sharp as its geologic namesake. Loaded with features, this premiere women’s hardtail is built for speed and comfort on the trail or on the racecourse."
Am sure she will be stopping less on it than she is on my old Saracen at the mo, and hopefully cresting more ridges instead! 8)0 -
Actually the verb is arreter - so it's arrete. Pretty similar though!0

C'est 'arrêt', n'est pas?
edit: dammit, I'm replying to something via the RSS feed, and didn't see the replies. I'll get my coat.Stumpy, Rockhopper (stolen!) & custom SX Trail II - that should do it!0
