Breaking rear spokes

Hi

I am battling with my rear spokes breaking reguarly. I am riding a 08 Spec StumpJumper Comp.

I have had 3 break in the last 6 or so rides. The last one was yesterday where I was riding around some trails. It was all fire road for the climb and then smooth single track back down. When I was cleaning my bike afterwards, I noticed another spoke gone.

I was thinking of upgrading the wheels to something lighter and stonger next year after the winter, but having to send my bike in every other week for new spokes is getting annoying.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

  • spokes only break for 3 reasons, not enough tension, worn or poor fit in the spoke holes or fatigue with age.

    try double butted spokes aswell.

I'd take the wheel to a good wheelbuilder (If you update your profile, or tell us which town you are in, someone may be able to suggestion) and see what the wheelbuilder says about the build.
Where abouts are the spokes failing ?

  • I'm on the Isle of Man.

The spokes are all breaking at the nipple.
  • You could just get the rear wheel rebuilt with DB spokes and new nipples.

It'll save you the hassle of constantly getting them replaced, and the wheel will be stronger if it is done properly.
