Etape & Marmotte Ideas

No, I've no plans to take part - not this year at least. :cry:

Here is my idea: go out for the week of each event and photograph riders training out there as well as on the day itself. On return to UK, riders can find their images on my website which of course will be fully searchable by event rider number.

Do you guys/girls think that would be a worthwhile venture, as I know myself from previous events it's a nightmare finding/getting a good image from the French sites.

    I had no problem finding images of myself at this year's Marmotte - ended up ordering 4 from various parts of the course and they arrived within a week or so. Not cheap mind, but narcissism never is :oops:

    There were also photographers permanently stationed halfway up Alpe D'Huez on the day we rode up to sign on a couple of days before.

    i also had photos taken on Alpe D'huez - they gave me a card and I looked 'em up on the internet. I wasn't part of the marmotte, just going up it on my hols. It all seemed quite straightforward. I didn't buy as I looked like a big sweaty cow!
    If you could make me look good in a photo, I would buy from you :D

    Photos Breton and at least one other outfit had the place staked out when I did the Marmotte in 2007. Pix were well indexed and easy to find. The spots you'll have to fight over are the 'Alpe d'Huez' banner towards the top of the AdH climb; and a point somewhere on the Galibier where there's a magnificent snowy mountain scene in the background. Didn't buy the pix 'cos I looked like a dead man riding.

    Hi Derek,
    Actually I think Photo Breton is great and he's the only chap I have ever spent money with. Never had any problems searching his website either. I think he has the Marmotte pretty much sewn up but there is the other guy Photo Griff too.
    Heres my 2006 Marmotte photo - http://img.ukclimbing.com/i/51520.jpg you can even see how he's used a bit of flash in there.

    On the other hand, the Maindru guy who was taking pics on the Etape two day's previous on the descent of The Izoard were rubbish. However you might want to check whether the Etape orgainisers will allow another commercial photographer on the route because I never noticed Photo Breton on the Etape route that year.

    Thanks Craig, really helpful.

    Agree about your photo, the guy knows what he is doing (using a blip of flash to fill in shadows and enhance the colours) and I've actually met the guy and chatted with him.

    I think it's the Maindru site that gave me the idea, as I too was not very positive about either the site or the images.

    Next year may well be a "go out and try it" while taking a holiday and doing some cycling, so not fully committed.

    Does andyone know the website or name of the 'other' photographer on Alpe d'huez this summer. We have a great photo from photo breton, of our 12 year old son climbing the ALpe, but the other photographer took a 'family' shot which I would love to see, unfortunately we lost the card she gave us. Any clues would be great.

    Have used photo breton(alpe) and sport-photo(ventoux) and the website was easy to navigate if you retain the cards. Would not hurt to have more pictures to choose from though Derek!

    I am going to do the marmotte in 2011 as next years just too hectic.
