I don't know what its called, but the bottom bearings sit on it and its attached to your fork steerer.

I have a new headset, going from crappy caged bearings to cartridge bearings, and i assume i'll need to remove that 'thing' attached to the forks. Hammer and screwdriver? Or is there a specific tool for the job? I haven't been able to find anything because i don't know what I'm looking for!!

Thanks :D

I'd get your lbs to do it. You'll need a crown race remover and a headset cup rocket. Not tools you need very often. You'll also need a press to pop in the new one.

All this can be bodged, but it is much better to use the proper tools.

    crown race.

look in the FAQ's or parktools.

I've got the headcup remover and the press (well, their on their way) so no worries there.

I guess i'll just have to go to the LBS :(
