Highest Roads and Road Passes

Just came across this interesting site...

It includes "A compendium of High Roads and Road Passes in Great Britain."

Click the 'Highest Roads' link and there's a couple of PDF files listing 145 of them (some with pictures). Must dig out a picture of Honister, Newlands and Whinlatter for him.

Well, it's something to read while the wind batters the rain against the window :-(

    Thanks v much for this. (just one glitch though, clicking second link get message to say file corrupted, sent email to notify owner of this).

    PS got very quick reply back to say that second file will be updated in a few days with extra pictures. In meantime right click and save target as works fine if you experience browser problems.

    Yes, it's good isn't it. I don't know of anything else like that around.

    I sent the guy some pics last night of Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Wall End and a few other bits and bobs so hopefully he'll include one or two.

    Be great if he keeps adding to it.

    He sent me a message saying that he's working on a route which he reckons has the most climbing in 50-60 miles in the UK. Can't wait to see where that is.

    Well Allan, I can't wait to see that!....He will have to go some to be that one we did in the Lakes this April.......

    Grasmere - Ambleside - 'The Struggle' - Hawkshead Hill - Tarn How -Torver - Steep 25%Bugger over to Broughton Mills - Stickle Pike 20% - Birker Fell 25% to start with - Hardknott West (yuck!) - Wrynose West - Blea Tarn (20%) - Red Bank (20%)....Grasmere.

    near 3000meters climbing in just 60miles....cannot think off a more hilly one...this was one killer straight after another....let me know mate...

    Fantastic and fascinating

    When I were nobbut a lad, there was a publication of “Hard Rock” a selection of iconic hard routes Many climbers in those days went all over ticking them off.

    I predict the same for cyclists and these Pdfs-starting here

    Excellent - I can tick off no. 3 - the Corrieyairack Pass. There's a wonderful mountain bike/duathlon event that goes over it in July each year - the Corrieyairack Challenge. I wouldn't fancy riding it east-to-west though - the ascent would be pretty unrideable in sections as it is today, and the descent would be fast and very scary!

    What a great find, thanks for the pointer to this rhnb.

    I will no doubt be looking to tick a few of these off very soon, I'm starting to mark off the ones I've ridden already.

    Not sure how they go about picking the '1000' climbs they chose, but there's a fair selection there. There's some very impressive scores in there - don't these people work? :wink: I've only managed to tick off 25 so far.

    Thanks also for this link..pefect for sad gits like me who keep a record of every climb they have made....and something to plan for next year...

    Just did it...I clocked up a whopping 36 Bigs......as always we all know tougher climbs than some what are listed...its you Donald Duck if you so happen to have ridden there choices....I'm gonna just keep on updating this from now on.....but its sobering when you see what you haven't done!

    Yes, odd that Cheddar Gorge is on there but the Cat & Fiddle isn't, for example.

    And I've already spent most of the morning, ticking and checking (some are called by two or more names-ie Sa Collobra) to reach 55 BIGS

    I've about a dozen to check, and I'm already enthused for next year. Italy here I come
