UK Audaxes / Sportives in May

Can anyone recommend any audax / long sportives around May time next year, or possibly March/ early April (don't know when the season is).

Must be UK, preferable easy to get to by train, and ride distance ideally over 200 miles.

And I know this is the wrong forum to ask about sportives, but I'm too scared to venture out of commuting, and I figured as you're all so clever, you may be able to help :D

And I can't edit the title. I'm sure 'audaxes' isn't actually a word, but it'll have to stay :x

Not really - it wil be done very leisurely!

I need to get some long rides in before August, and I figured an audax would be a bit more interesting than thirty laps of Richmond Park, as nice as the park may be...

  • Not may sportives over 100 miles ish

I did the White Horse Challenge this year which was April, 90 miles & very entertaining. You could always do 2 laps.

Come with me round the Isle of Wight. Good hill practice, around 67 miles and it's very scenic

    Free most Sundays

    I don't *do* hills ;)

I may just take you up on that though - I haven't been to the IOW since I was a kid.

The White Horse sounds good too.

Don't think you're going to find a sportive of any length that doesn't include hills, Jen.

We could design one in East Anglia! Now that would be punishment....

I could just go round the M25 a few times?

I going to have to deal with hills, I know. But the IOW is particuarly hilly (at least I know that the marathon there is a very hilly course). But it's still an attractive prospect anyway...

In the Guardian recently it was classified as one of the top 50 rides. The smug writer described it as "flattish"....
I did it with a friend on an MTB (me on Frank) in 5hrs48 in June, when I was less fit than now. Counted 22 of the tinkers, but the views are spectacular (esp on the south coast) and if I can do it, you can!

Tour of Wessex is normally the end of May ( bank holiday weekend ) this year it was 325 miles over 3 days. Its very hilly though...

You could train it down easily enough from where you live I would have thought.

Arh the old misconception that the Fens, and East Anglia are the same thing, they are not.
Norfolk and Suffolk can be very lumpy in places.

I can't remember my user ID or password to filter the results for your area, Jen. The first number in each audax is the distance in km. Have a look in Sportives and Road Rides for sportives.

Actual Audak UK website is http://www.aukweb.net/cal/index.htm. Non-members can only see 4 months in advance.

From this thread it looks like Cyclosport.org's worth bookmarking. It's probably worth noting that it's a preliminary calender - the same with the audax calendar above.

Must be UK, preferable easy to get to by train, and ride distance ideally over 200 miles.
I did a search for long sportives earlier this year and the longest I could find was the Dave Lloyd Mega Challenge. From the
BR article on the 2009 DLMC it's only 145 miles with 6000m of climbing.

But that's 5,995 metres more climbing than Jen's prepared to do! You're not help at all!

There is the 600km Offa's Dyke audax during July. Trouble is I know the organiser, and he is very keen on hills...

    I'm thinking about:

for next year. And, all being well, the 'Nae Bother to Us 400'.The 300km's will be 75km more than I've ridden in one day before.

Offa's dyke sound good, but I don't know if July will be doable for me. The ones above for May sound good.

And I can just walk up the hills, can't I...? ;)

Sorry if this repeats info earlier in the thread, but I posted a thread over on tuther forum asking about decent websites for listings, and got these in reply:

    http://www.cyclosport.org/events2009.aspx

    http://www.bike-events.com/Default.aspx

    http://www.everydaycycling.com/

    http://www.audax.uk.net/index2.htm

    http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?ie=UTF ... 9e5f22&z=6

I think the general concensus was that the 1st one was the most comprehensive, and that more 09 dates would begin appearing soon.

Personally I thought the google maps one was awesome, and I think that was posted earlier on in this thread

    Felt F70 05 (Turbo)
Marin Palisades Trail 91 and 06
    Scott CR1 SL 12

Give me hills over the brutal headwinds of East Anglia any day!

This climbs almost the exact height of Mount Everest. Still keen?
