What is the history of the expression "Metalled Road?"
I understand it's a tarmac road but why metalled?
I've looked it up on the internet and all I keep getting is mixed information...

I think its something to do with steel slag that is added to build up of the road, which is put in to increase longevity2014 Whyte T-129S0

i always understood that the road was metalled when it was that chunky mix of chippings and tar rather than smooth tarmac surface.
this me be of hee haw help sorry.0 -
which means it breaks up in our climate, nice crunchy surfaces... cracks ...bumps, holes...yep lovely.0
