Hi, i know this type of thing has come up count-less times but thought i'd moan again any-way.

Was coming down the hill into Bath this morning (about 30mph) for work and a granny in a Ford Ka pulled out of a junction and promptly stopped in the middle of the road,staring at me :shock: :x I gritted my teeth leaned back and thought sh1t, do i;
1 slam the brakes on and face plant,
2 slam into the grannies car and claim off her insurance,
3 bail out and hope for the best,
luckily i didn't need to take any of these options as the other side of the road was clear so swerved around. Anyhoo if the swerve option wasn't there what would people on here do/ have they done in similar circumstances :?:

I agree. Total nuisance. They should be put down at birth.

  • You were lucky with having the escape route - the last time a grandad did that to me I went for a shoulder charge and spent half a day in A&E with a twisted hip (there was too much oncoming to go for a swerve...).
At least he got an 'official' warning from the local cops... :D

As soon as they buy the stringbacked driving gloves and matching short greenish-grey jacket, the police should be notified so they can pull them off the road....

  • The Old Dear who remodeled my collar bone for me in 2004 offered her excuse for failing to spot 95kg of beefcake in flo green lycra as "I wasn't wearing my glasses as it was only a local journey".

There was a happy outcome to the matter; not only did it give me a good excuse not the ride/suffer on any of the events I had been training hard for, but the Hampshire police deemed the case so trival that it was only worth "an informal warning"

Nearly knocked over a granny yesterday. She stepped out in the road without looking and I was just able to brake and swing in behind her.

People wouldnt do that to a car I'm sure.

I had a woman in her 50's run across a road against the little red man and doing so in heels, and then freeze as i came rather close, within inches, to barrelling into her at 25mph. I was going through a green light to turn left at the time

No idea if she was a grandmother, pretty sure she was stupid though, which I'm sure the torrent of expletives I let loose made clear.

Problem of course with the Darwinian theory is that if their stupidity has killed them but they've already had children, their stupid genes have survived to infect another generation....

I did, with a little help from the nice people at Bikeline. I even had my day in court after her insurer tried to play silly buggers (the normal tactics - you can buy a bike for £99, I didn't need so much private physio work, you can ride a National Championship on a couple of hours training....)

Not only was their defense full of holes, but their barrister had an off-day and made a hash of presenting it. I was ready to accept £8,500 to settle but by the time the District Judge had 'punished' the otherside for wasting his time I got the full £10,000 I put tickets in for..

Where would MTB'ers be without their rings
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • I had a deaf and blind old fucker step off the pavement right in fount of me after the daft sod had stood and stared at me for a full two seconds as I was coming down the road towards him.
I only avoided knocking him down by swerving across the road, but I did explain to him that the next time I wouldn't be so considerate, or words to that effect. Some people really shouldn't be allowed out the the house without an escort.

  • I go past a WI hall nearly every ride I do, and it seems they've employed someone specifically with the job to wait unitl i'm going to go past the entrance, look directly at me then pull out with metres to spare.

When will this danger to other road users be banned? Hanging is too good for them, bring back public flogging etc and so on....

Whip is likely to catch in the spokes, though I guess there could be a special cyclists version, with a holder, that could be whipped out and used while moving (I'm thinking cowboy movies here)

Of course a cycling whip would need to be used against cars, so while dangerous I'd be looking at something that could dent panels/smash windscreens.

  • A tazer thingy might be good. One that shoots darts on the end of wires and zapps them with 50,000 volts leaving the victim lying in a pool of piss and dribble then you just wind the wires back in and cycle on your way.

leaving the victim lying in a pool of wee-wee and dribble then you just wind the wires back in and cycle on your way.

So what's the point of a taser as it doesn't appear to have any discernible effect on your average granny??

They do though. About 650 pedestrians each year get killed crossing roads.

I can't believe you just said that. You'll be an average granny one day. :)

  • Bailing being mentioned at the beginning of this thread; well, I don't know about cycle insurance, but if you chucked yourself off a m/cycle as the lesser of 2 evils, avoiding a collision, you'd be liable to lose any claim as YOU would be claimed to be the one riding recklessly.
