Phil & Friends - cancelled???? No!

Just been on to the AUK website and found that the ride has been cancelled!. Went on to CTC's website and found it wasn't! Confused of Hinckley rang CTC to be told that it's no longer an audax due to "audax" chappie at ctc leaving the organisation. However the ride is still on tho' from a different location:
For the first time this year, the event starts from Wood Lane House Farm Countryside Centre, Wood Lane, Sheffield, S6 5HE alongside the inaugural Sheffield Festival of Cycling, which will offer local CTC-escorted family rides, mountain bike skills sessions, great norther food and beer, music and trade stands.

So no massive downhill to start with (as in previous years) BUT does that mean its a huge uphill from the new start?? Anyone know yet?
Am doing the 100k as usual.

They don't make the best of the event - they could get far more people riding it if they showed a little bit of initiative in publicising it.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

The Community Centre is about halfway up a hill from Malin Bridge into Stannington, so it depends on the route (which I'm not sure of myself). I should *imagine* that the ride will head out through Stannington into the Peaks, not least because the hill down to Malin Bridge from the Centre is really steep! If I'm right, it'll be an uphill start but it won't be a killer.

    Hope this helps.

too true! With it not being an Audax I imagine that even less peeps will show up this year. I do think it has a fundamental flaw tho'. Its not really run as an Audax and its certainly not run as a sportive (hope I got the spelling correct!!). They call it a "Challenge" ride which it most certainly is. But the cost is in sportive territory. Admittedly they are raising much needed fundes for CTC (which I wholeheartedly support) but I imagine its the lack of signage etc that puts lots of riders off.
Despite not being the quickest up Holme Moss, being rubbish on the third climb out of Glossop (I do hate that road) and am just about all done in on the final climb after Ladytbower, its my favourite ride of the year. Phil Liggett is a nice chap to boot.
If you have looked at the YouTube link I put in above and can remember the tandem-dad-and-son riders, I was about 10 meters away from them as "Phil & Friends" passed by with camers etc. Thats my "almost claim to fame"

This is interesting; I wonder who was behind removing it from the AUK calendar. Presumably with no AAA or AUK points and a higher than average entry fee it's going to lose out to other AUK events.

The CTC used to organise a great Southern version from my home town, but that ultimately suffered the same fate even though it was only IIRC run as an AUK event the first year.

My club did consider running it as a semi-sportive event but again the sportive calendar is full around that time of year and I'm busy enough organising my own AUK ride.

I know this is a bit of a how long is a piece of string question. But how long does the average rider take to complete the 150km route.

My usual long rides are 50-60miles and I'm trying to gauge from that how long it would take but I expect that my ave MPH will drop off through the last 30 miles. Any opinions welcome.

    Thanks

Well this is not quite the answer you want but if you have never ridden the P&F's, you need to be informed that the REALLY tough bit comes towards the end of the 100km ride for those doing the full monte. The ride is identical other than the outrageous (imho) loop that the tough guys have to do (the bit with winnats in btw). Me? I'm a whimp and do the hard (for me) 100km. It rightly lives up to its title as a "challenge ride". If you live ina hilly area you might not findit so challenging but living in flatshire, I certainly do.

Thanks for the reply. I have ridden in the area a bit so know what to expect from the hills, the unkown is how my legs will respond to them after 100km!

I've been trying to find a map of the route but as I'm not a CTC member I can't get it from their site. Does anyone have a link or a MM file they can send me?

    Thanks

I'm not sure the last bit is tougher than the first bit - sure WInnats at about 2/3rds distance is the hardest climb but you've got the Strines and Holme Moss fairly early on.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

I can send you the mmo file for memory map if you pm me. Well, I can send the 100km route! It starts from the "old" start in Stanington.

and yes, I'd forgotten how tough Strines is. The first time I did Strines, I thought it was Holme Moss. Imagine my dismay upon being corrected.

I'm doing the ride for the first time this year. I have signed up for the 150km. Is it true they don't have any signs/marshalls? I think this is the 150km route based on the directions I got sent:

I came a cropper big style on Thursday. severe case of road rash, trashed helmet (ordered new one under "crash replacement" policy) and my back has been in spasm since then. Cough? I'd rather die than cough!!!!!! Even the Diclophenac tablets from the doctor are not helping much - well if they are, it must be really bad! And all my own fault. Foot (I think) just came out of cleat as I was trying to power away from a junction. Teach me to remain seated.

I don't think the tinyurl site includes any spyware. ZoneAlarm is probably being overly cautious as it could redirect to anywhere.

    Try this :

    150km route

Reading reports from previous years I think this is the 100km route. (ctc says it is 106km, google says 107km)

    100km route

Cheers for the replies - I got the directions through the post and mapped it out on MM. I went out today to ride the northern section of the ride up and over Holme Moss. It was tough ended up doing the equivalent of the 100km route I think. My legs certainly felt it. It is going to be a real challenge to get round the 150km - my plan is to have plenty of refueling stops on the way.

Good luck to everyone taking part - may meet a few of you on the day.

I am going to aim for 7 hours including stops, so my plan is a single 30min stop at Edale. Living down South, I'm not used to big hills so it may not work out as planned!
  • can anyone tell me if it is ok to enter on the day?

i did it a few years back and really struggled later on. i should be fitter this year but we'll see...
