hi, i am after starting mountain biking hoping to go off road alot mainly lake district area so quite rugged territory ! in these times of credit cruch i only have £300 to spend on a bike and have seen these two :
GT Avalance 3 08 model with disc brakes
Specialized hardrock Comp disc 08 model
would these two models be able to cope with rough terrain as well as road work if needed ? of the two models which is better spec in your opinion ? last thig is there any other bike that is sub £300 that would be a better purchase than these two bearing in mind my use for the bike ?
thanks all for you help in advance

Some alternative options in the What Bike thread. The GT has the better spec, but try them out.0

re the Mongoose Tyax Elite on that thread you suggested a look at, is it the 07 or 08 model you were talking about ?0
-
The 08 is listed, but the 07 was a better bike.0

i can get an gt avalance 3 disc version for £260 or Mongoose Tyax Elite 07 for £250. in your unbiased opinion which is the better deal, thanks for all you help0

The Tyax probably, but the key is to try them out. They are both very good value, so it will come down to what fits and feels best.0

with regards to your what bike thread on the 300 - 500 quid bikes i have found the following
if you were going to buy one which would you get, best componenets and lastability for the uses i have in mind ?
GT Avalanche 2 07 model £347
Mongoose Tyax Super 08 model £299
ditto 07 model £334
Trek 4500 08 model £350
Specialized Hardrock pro disc 08 model £350
sorry to be a pain but i am new to MTB's and dont want to waste my money, times are hard if you know what i mean
thanks again for all your help, your a star !0 -
For lighter XC duties, the Trek would be my choice for the reasons outlined in that thread: no disc brakes, but money invested in a decent gear set and fork.
If venturing further a field, then the Mongoose or GT, as both have superior brakes in the rough stuff.
So a quick sit on either will give you more of a feel for the size and shape of it.
I'd avoid the hardrock, as the fork and components put it at a disadvantage from the off.0 -
which mongoose model would you say best 07 or 08, do you know if they are cable or hydrolic discs ?0
-
Both hydro as far as I am aware. I think the 07 was slightly better specced.0
