Bagpuss - A Raleigh to identify

Hi Paul,

I've just collected this;

Strangly it has a Cinelli BB and frame number SB7402 with 53 stamped on the opposite side of the BB from the frame number.

Do you think it could have an Italian thread BB, as I can't get a modern Shimano BB to fit

    Pete .You have a special products built frame .Sometimes these would also bear the Initials of the rider who the frame was built for.As for the thread on the b/b.If the cups do not start off by hand. I would ask your local bike shop if you could try a cup with Italian thread.I do not know a better way of doing it. I had the same issue with a Colnago frame,but at was a forgone conculsion.
    I will ask my mate to see if he has come across another Raleigh with an Italian thread.

    hi pete - that's a very lovely raleigh! i really like it. i converted an old raleigh 531 to replace my bob jackson. it's actually come out really well, i show you at some point. it has 'raleigh' engrave on the seat stays and the clearance are quite tight. very light and whippy, not a ti, but probably a higher end frame.

    some Ralieghs had different bottom brackets, no idea whether yours will, but you should be able to tell

    Thanks all. So can anyone confirm the year and Paul how would this frame compare to the Raleigh TI in quality etc.

    Pete.Link for Raleigh Special Products.Go to 3.7.3.Special products were the finest Raleigh frame ever made .all were built to team standards.Both 753 and 531 tubes were used by the special products unit .Ti stands for Tube Investments the holding company of which Raleigh was a major part .
    I will come back to you with the date of the frame.

    Thanks for the info. I can't wait to get this on the road, once I've solved the BB mystery, although I think I've got an Italian threaded BB tucked away in the spare garage and altough the axle is too wide, at least I should be able to work out what thread it is.

    This one came from Lincs. the chap selling still has a Bob Jackson track bike and a big green track bike, plus 2 pairs of sprint wheels and tons of cyclecross stuff, frames, wheels etc.

    should do, i use 111mm centaur with pista record, but have used 107 miche before. if not, it's mega cheap anyway.

    Looks like a pro special build track frame. Rear facing dropouts and no drillings for brakes are a bit of a clue.

    Raleigh did use 26tpi thread BBs (mainly in Carlton frames IIRC) for a while but they won't have retapped a Cinelli BB - it'll be Italian thread for sure.

    26 tpi was used only on Raleigh. Carltons were standard 24tpi.

    Pete, just got up to speed with this post. I have a Campag pista bb with italian threading if not too late......
