On One inbred SS. What's next?

I'm fairly new to MTBing but I've got an old V braked single speed On One. I'm tempted to change bikes, as a lot of the componants are "tired".
I want to stick to single speed if money were no object (I wish) what should I consider?

    Hello Pete! (Gary)

    If it's a SS you're after - Cotic Single?
  • Sorry! This is right up my street and I missed it! Good to hear of another singlespeed rider.
A Surly 1x1 was my last bike. I'd give that a huge thumbs up! Ignore the forks on mine (see below titled 'my old 26er'), they were way too flexy.
Its a 4130 cromo steel frame, so rides really well, soaks up punishment and costs £325. It takes V-Brakes or discs, so that might make it a bit of a cheaper option. You'd still be looking at the thick end of £700 to get it to even a fairly basic level. However, it's always worth checking your LBS for secondhand spares. I'd always recommend going to your LBS for the parts (They may discount the build cost), not online (the following is for illustrations and info only!).
You'll find the frame here: http://www.ison-distribution.com/ison/english/product.php?part=FMSU114K.
And here, a small list of parts I'd recommend, good stuff that won't cost the earth.
Fork wise I'd go http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=24977 in either 85 or 100mm flavours, or if thats over budget http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=13119.
These wheels http://www.ison-distribution.com/ison/english/product.php?part=WHHAF6KF, or maybe these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=15706. These for your brakes http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=22185. And a headset? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=275. Lastly a set of bars http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=11618 and stem (I'd go 70mm for snappy handling, 90mm for relaxed) http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=7222.
Job done and hope it's all okay

I quite like the idea of the Cotic Simple, although I'm not sure it would be way better than the On One and I'm afraid I discounted the Surly because of the weight.
If money was no object the Soulcraft Plowboy looks interesting..

Sheepsteeth, ye Gods, I see what you mean.
Flybywire, too big for me and I'm after a ss frame with track ends. I'm not a fan of tensioners.

I dunno, I quite like the look of the Jones frames ;)

What about getting something like a nice Independent Fabrication, Spot or DeKerf frame built for you?

You asked for a suggestion on what to get, and that you were after a singlespeed.
    So I suggested a BMX.

    Kegs,
Now we're getting into what if territory, I love the Independent Fabrication and Spot but not the eccentric BB that is a possibility with the DeKerf frame. Although I still have a yearning for a Soulcraft Plowboy.........................

  • Pete Beer: My Surly came in at 25.5Lbs which may sound heavy, but it rode like it was a 23Lbs rocket! Uphill, it stayed with skimpy race bikes, and murdered the singletrack (Black and Red runs) at Thetford. The forks were the only
If money was no object, I'd have another one. Even if it is not a 29er.

Can't see anything wrong with it, sheepsteeth.

p.s. I have a friend that calls my rigid, single 29er 'The bike of five wrongs' .
    1. Rigid forks
    2. Singlespeed
    3. 29" wheels
    4. On One Mary Bars
    5. 2.1" tyres

Damm. Yes, the forks were the only thing that spoiled the ride.

wheel size, suspension type and number of gears are all wrong.

Now if only it were an unicycle, he'd have got everything wrong.

Seriously though, what the hell are rigid singlespeed discussions doing in the mountain bike section? I bet you're all from essex, trying to figure out the ideal bikes for the 2012 Olypic XC event or something.

We've got some pretty ordinary trails here in the centre of Bristol that come alive when you subject yourself to a ridged singlespeed...

Well, you don;t beling on a mountain bike forum then, you need something like a psychiatrist or something

Now, if you were into bobsleighing, that's a different kettle of fish.

PS, what's with the shaky, blurry pictures? is that a lack of suspension?

If you've got a nice frame (I've heard that they are good) why not keep it and upgrade the components? You could even get a new custom paint job if you like.

Anyway, the Orange P7 comes in SS. Nice bikes and if you drive a BMW or Audi it will suit you perfectly!

I'd keep it - you won't get anything much better IMO.

The Ti frame is fab, but not a proper SS, otherwise you may be right.

OK, next qustion. I've fitted Avid Arch Rival V brakes which are great. Is it worth getting a more modern On One frame and going to discs, or upgrade my wheels and stick with what I've got. I'm light and don't do downhill. I'm in Bristol so I use it mainly to go to Ashton Court, Leigh Woods and 500 acres and once a year for the Kona 6 hour..

Discs made a big difference to be on my hardtail but I don't know that part of the world - it's all Lakes & Dales for me. If you feel like more braking power would help then go for it.
