is shimano deore any good?

hi all is basic deore kit any good?
its a set of shiters inc front and rear mech https://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=prod ... egoryId=84
at £40 quid it seems a bargain to me?
even if it will only last 6 months it gives my wallet some time to recover after its recent kicking lol
o will mostly be road use with light xc

    Deore is the standard workhorse of the Shimano range, found on bikes from £400+. Good quality & long life.

    Shimano cassette yes, but a lot of folks (myself included) use a Sram chain. What speed cassette are you using with this set up?

    was just going to use a standard 9 speed
    all tho is there a good reason to pick a 8 speed?

    I highly recommend an XT cassette (best value for weight, 100g lighter than Deore Cassette) with a Sram PC 951 or PC 971 chain.

    No reason to go 8 spd, go 9 spd, just wondered for recommendations ;)

    Deore mechs are fine, I agree, cheap shimano casettes are not though, buy a sram casette and chain, my srams lasted nearly twice as long as the shimano bits now.

    Sram cassette's are heavier & don't shift as smoothly as Shimano.

    8 speed generally is more mud resistant, as everything is slightly wider spaced. seven speed is even better!!

    But with 7 & 8 speed you have larger jumps between the gear ratio's ;)

    Plus 7 & 8 speed high end parts* don't really exist any more, unless you get lucky!

    aye aye, very true. ive got an 8 speed XT shifter which i fully intend to keep forever. cnat say the big gaps between ratios really ever bothered me though, even on my 7 speed
