Cone spanners?

I have a slight bit of play in my rear hub, and am looking at tightening the cone to get rid of it. Park tools say you need a cone spanner to do this, but I was wondering, what is the difference between a cone spanner and a normal one of the right size? Why must you use a cone spanner? I'm sure there's an obvious answer, but I'm curious?

cone spanners are much thinner, and allow you to tighten the locknut effectively.
A norml spanner's width means you'd struggle, at best.

Thanks, anyone know which sizes are standard for Shimano Deore (M525) hubs?

13mm front, 15mm rear: 17mm locknuts (for a normal spanner)

You'll be probably see double ended spanners in LBS 13/14mm & 15/16mm. Word of warning, do not use the 15mm for your pedals as you'll turn it into a 15.5mm
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
