after a great ride yesterday i am now in need of a new chain!! broke twice withing 2 miles!
so have been looking and have found two i quite fancy, but am unsure which will be better?? they are both highly rated and are pretty much the same price (a couple of quid difference on crc)
so does anyone have any experience of either the Connex Wippermann 920 teflon coated, or KMC X9L Gold nitride coating??

i am leaning a little towards the wippermann at the mo, but thought i would ask out and see if anyone has any experience of either!
Ta in advance!

KMC, nitride is harder than 'flon, and IIRC connex have wierd powerlinks

I have been through both chains, with connex you have to get the powerlink the right way up otherwise it skips but once fitted it's very reliable but the teflon wears fast and the chain is a bit on the lardy side.

The kmc9l ti chain is what im using right now, it's a bit like a sram chain but marginally better shifting and stays cleaner thanks to the coating.

But i would use a 9 speed sram powerlink instead of what kmc provide as once fitted it's a royal pita to remove.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Well personally i prefer the kmc but they're both reliable chains.

Neither have broke on me, ive bent a link on the kmc only to bend it back and the thing is still working fine. 8)

  • have run XT for years but famncy a change! first chain lasted 4 years, then changed cassette and chain and in the last 18 months have gone through 3 chains! odd really, but as said, just fancy a change and the two i listed are the one's i ma liking! (after hearing that connex are better than sram from some people i trust)

Snapped on it's very first ride using the correct method of fitment, they are very smooth but if your not a whippet your buggered.

got nearly 2k miles outta mine before .75 "kmc x9 l" 400 miles and already at .75. that's on a new cassette too. i'll be going back to xtr once this hits 1.0 which wont be long i think. oh i am about 9 stone and prefer fast cadence.
  • 9 STONE!!! bloody hell thats a dream for me lol! currently on the 15 stone mark! (hovering slightly below)
the KMC has a good breakage rate and should be good for my riding and yes a bit of bling would be cool although its obnly the chainset, wheels and stem thats not carbon on my bike now! 8)

I have the KMC chain too..

Here's a picture of the bling...

Although this did happen(see below), it hasn't happened again, not sure if it was the chain or chainring that screwed it up..

I'm coming up for nearly a 1000 miles since that little problem..

    I'm a lightweight too, under 9 stone with a high cadence (80-100+)
  • ordered the kmc this morning!!

swapped the middle ring on my chainset too with one of a spare set that's not half as worn as my Xt one!! (cant afford a new chain and chain ring!!) hopefully that should help as had a smidge of chain suck of the old one! looking forward to getting the chain now!!! want to get out and ride hahah!
