Hi,

I want to ride to Cardigan Bay from Swindon, avoiding as many of the main A roads as poss. An overnight stop over is to be factor'd in also. Who do you use for route planning said route, I have tried "theaa.com" and RAC's equiv but neither allow me to go into exacting detail on the type of roads i want to ride. Also, it would be great to work out the total amount of climbing per day also.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

I've used this in the past.
Powered by Haribo. Zwift convert P.aul Laws [x]
  • Via Michelin have a 'by bike' option, which the AA etc don't have. However, you can't specify non-A roads. I've used it recently to go from Ashford to Oxford via London, and the route it suggested was pretty good.
  • Also, if you plot your own route, 'mapmyride' can show you the elevations for the route.

    Thanks all for your help
  • maps.google.com and/or bikely.com. And you can export the route to gpx format to use with your GPS, if you have one.

Yeah you have to love google maps - try:

    http://maps.google.co.uk

and it will save you starting from the US.

I like it over the rest because it allows dynamic rerouting ie you just drag your road onto another road and it will recalculate the quickest route based on your changes. Much harder to do on other routing sites in my opinion. Once I have a route I like the look of I then export it to http://mapmyride.com where I view the elevation profile.

On google many of the roads are listed by their classification ie my main road is the A24 however that doesn't give you any indication as to how busy it actually is but it at least its a good start.

Never done it though it seems simple enough. If you look across the top of the site you will see an "My Training Log" Text Area just click on it and it will bring to another page will allow you to add an activity. If you have your routes set up then you should be able to add all the data relating to your ride such as average heart rate, max HR, avg speed, max speed etc though as I say I haven't used but it would be pretty crap if it didn't allow this sort of thing.
