Road bike brakes work fantastically well, I do find using better pads helps as well - personally I go for Swisstop pads on the beast bike and dual compound kool stops on the commuter.

I have no problem with the canti's on my road bike. For those of us who started their cycling career with Wienmann caliper brakes, rubber brake blocks and steel rims modern brakes are a revelation.

My road bike has 20+ years old Campag GS side pulls which look weedy compared to a modern dual pivot, however I can lock the wheels easily.I think it's something to do with the brake block material-it's some sort of red rubber that doesn't seem to wear out.

Hey - at least they were branded!
I started my "career" on a Raleigh Striker!
