After washing my Klein Attitude Comp this evening noticed that i'm missing a tooth on the granny ring and on the middle ring and theres also fair bit of wear on the ones thats left. I've also been thinking for some time of changing the big ring to something above the 44 tooth currently fitted. What would be the the most cost effective ,new rings or new chainset? I'm not sure what the current chainset is except i thinks its Shimano and the rings are marked
M9 N-22 WF
M9 N-32 WE
M9-44 WF

The bike is used mostly for XC and Trail riding and my max budget would be up to about £50 . Ps 9 speed cassette fitted to rear with with XTR on rear on LX Deore front

What would you guys recommend?

looks like a basic shimano square taper fitting crankset. fo the ring bcb will be 104mm for the outer and middle and 64mm for the granny.

TBH you might find a square taper fitting crankset for 50. if you look about. you will need a crank puller to remove the cranks from the bb.

Many thanks :D . When looking for a new crank set what should i be looking for in order to make sure it's compatible with my existing BB?

Finding a new chainset with 26/36/48 and a square taper for £50 could be tricky. A slightly cheaper and safer option (in terms of BB comatibility) is to replace your rings as follows:

    26 tooth http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=5698
    36 tooth http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=5699
    48 tooth http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=5700

    for £27.

Would most probably need a new front mech if go for 48T large ring.

Nope - will have to slide it up a couple of mm but I've never needed to use anything other than a standard MTB triple front mech with a "trekking" chainset.

Most front MTB mechs are rated as 44T max, especially when used with a compact crank. Using them on 48T can cause problems, due to the curvature difference. Try it by all means. But it is not designed to work 100% efficiently if rated at 44t and this has happened to me more than once.

Not sure about your statement Sonic that most front mech are only good for 44T.

Alivio, Deore, XT, X5, X7 and X9 are all specced as 44/48 cross compatible.

Only LX and XTR are specced to be 44T only.

Whilst I haven't tried an XTR front mech (and wouldn't) on a 48T ring I have run aN LX front mech on a tourer with a 26/36/48 Firex chainset without problems

Many newer ones are. Some. Some are dual compatible 44-48t, some are either/or with Shimano MTB mechs depending on model. There are two current XT that are just 44T, and a raft of deore options.

Lots of front mechs used that you see are still for 44t and some only 42T!

What I am saying is check.
