Horse poo v dog poo

I was out today and to swerve to avoid a huge steaming pile of horse dung that was littering a bridleway! So why are dog owners encouraged to pick up their pets poo but horse riders are just allowed to leave it there steaming away? :? :? :?

Horse riders round here are bar-stewards. Doesn't matter WHAT you do, they sneer at you, as if you're a lower form of life than them. Honestly, you try, but what's the point?

Yeh, dog poo is really nasty. In particular it can make kids go blind - people who leave dog poo on the ground should be shot. Horse poo on the other hand smells ok, is good for gardens, and is entirely made of vegetable matter. If I'm going to have to land face first in any sort of poo then horse poo suits me just fine.

It's hardly as if you're going to put your foot in a pile of horse poo - it's way too big to miss. As said above, horse poo it basically just decomposed vegetable matter. What comes out of a dog's @rse, on the other hand, is vile.

Not strictly true. It is a worm called Toxocara canis which can cause blindness in children. This can be in the dog poo but not if they're regularly wormed.

As for the horse poo - I doubt most riders would even be aware that their horse had been to be honest.

But cat crap is tiny, and is usually buried by the cat after being laid.

No significant nasties in horse poo. Not if its well anyway and it's unlikely you'd be riding an unwell one.

    Horse poo - herbivore merde.
    Dog poo - carnivore turd.

    Very very different.

I think horse riding has been around a LOT longer than bike riding somehow - give them some slack.

MTBing and/or running alongsdie wife horse riding is sonething I find very fun indeed.

Just like people that hate dogs are ignorant, so are those that dislike horses.

Yeah, I totally agree that the defectation types are poles apart by virtue of the difference in what they eat. And yeah dog turd is more packed with 'goodies' than horse turd. However, both have goodies such as E.coli in 'em that are pretty infamous pathogens.

I suppose as doggie doo-doo is worse than horse crap as it is smaller an often hidden from view. Ya only notice it when it's splattered on ya down tube an exuding that thoroughly minging aroma; then it's too late!

Well they would end up with back packs of crap...Plus if they arnt rich enough for serves they gotta muck out the stables so they are prob sick of all that turd...

We all have E.coli in our gut, it's part of the normal intestinal flora. Most species of E.coli are totally harmless too. The one that has been the cause of many cases of food poisoning is E.coli O157 and it's a nasty little blighter.

I did farm labouring many years ago - looked after 40 shetland and a couple of Arab thoroughbreds - love horses but I'm a hopeless rider.

Wife is a bit of a horse ninja - played polo, done three day eventing, etc.

You can do it very cheaply if you find someone wanting a competent rider to exercise their horse.

Not hard to get control over a horse though.

They don't like being approached head on (best from the side), they REALLY don't like people with their arms out straight (their eyesight makes you look bigger - same with cows), clapping loudly scares them and you can tell if they are naffed off because they put their ears back.

Bit of confidence and a horse is pretty safe.

meh, rowers are better, full body lycra and they have a wonderful habit of stripping off in the sun...
  • Oh I know rowers are good. The then current Miss Reading of the time rowed at Reading Rowing club whilst I was there!
