Hi there....

I am looking to get a mountain bike for some offroad fun on singletrack, forest trails and general XC riding and maybe some tricks???

I have an ageing GT avalanche 3 which is too small (a medium frame) and i am 6'2" !!

My mum needs a new bike as her GT hardtail is a mans, and doesn't fit her. She has great components.. and she will sell it to me for cheap if i want the parts.

What i was thinking was I could buy a 2006/7 model Full Suss frame and move parts across
from my mums bike...

or get a new hardtail bike....

I have about £400 to spend, maybe more and i will have to wait a few months.. but i want to know whether it is a good idea to move components across from another bike??

the only problem is that her bike has Vee-Brakes and will a new frame fit V-s??

I have found three frames so far...

obviously the pinnacle will be at the top of my limit...

also is the Nelson frame (top link) any good??? or is it just something some shop bought from a shed-workshop???

Avoid the Nelson, unheard of, no shock.

Whether all the parts will fit depends on the frame. Fork might be too short in the steerer, seatpost, clamp and front mech different sizes. Frame must have V mounts. Headset to worry about too... only way is to do your homework!

What parts are on this bike? The Kona and Pinnacle are good value, but as above, need to investigate the fixtures and fittings.

Or to save time and pain, could look at this:

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=10840

Then swap the parts you like. No faffing with headsets and stuff.
  • firstly the Nelson frame comes with a shock or without i think the link shows the one with shock

but true i haven't heard of them either...

I will check the HT i have at home but i know it has a rokshox judy fork shimano gears and i think tektro Vee Brakes.

I am going to look online at 2006-7 full sussers to see if i can get a bargain.

  • well looks like a decent Hardtail is winning... and i've already worked out which ones i like

the GT avalanche 2.0 (or 1.0 if i can find one locally to test)
    The Giant XTC 4.5
And finally the mongoose Tyax super.

just need to look at reviews now

the other thing is it will have slightly newer and possibly better parts than if i put my stuff on a frame.

I might end up with a Full suss bike in a few years when i finish Uni but I will definately ask for help here when i do!!!

Thanks for the help... any more help is great especially user opinions of bikes.

have a look at the merlin bikes at www.merlincycles.co.uk under custom bikes

maybe you could get a cheeky sale bike if their the right size.

There's 10% of the full price ones but add £30 for delivery. (check on the basket system)
