Recovery drink recommendations

Can anyone recommend any recovery drinks? I'm not racing or anything like that but I am doing about 150 miles a week on a serious recreation basis. If it helps your answers, I am looking to drop my weight from 16 stone to a 14 stone, especially when the better weather comes around again.

Thanks.

  • Get your self some whey protein mix, Not soy protein as this can lower testosterone. Soy protean is a cheaper protein source and is found in some leading brand drinks. Read the label. The whey is easily digested and provides fuel for muscle rebuilding and growth.

Don't worry too much about drinks with carbs in them, If you ride in the morning I recommend a bowl of porridge and as you are trying to loose weight semi or skimmed milk and a banana. For other times of day bananas and dried fruit and nuts. Try to take your recovery drink and food within 30 mins of stopping excercise.

    Hi there.

1 banana, 1 tub of natural yogurt, 1/2 cup of skimmed milk + any other soft fruit lying around

Stick in blender and 20 seconds later you have a perfect combination of protein, carbs and all those vitamin thingmys that your mum said were good for you.

No artificial chemical rubbish and a fraction of the cost of sports drinks that the marketing men would have you buy.

    Cheers, Andy

    Hi again.

    I agree with this too.

Porridge - I think I'd be pysically unable to leave the house without a bowl of porridge every morning. I stick honey in mine though. mmm mmm.

    Cheers, Andy

ps Bet Mike has his with salt...

I might be inclined to add a sachet of rehydration salts . Flavoured or not it will ensure that you keep well hydrated and prevent cramps. Get em from Boots around £2.95 for 5x sachets

SIS Rego recovery drinks taste OK and work well for me. Recommended if you can't be bothered with the DIY approach. Just add water, shake and drink.

Milk shake is all you need...or you could just spend money on some hyped powder instead.
Either pre-made chocco-milks or Nesquick powder and full-strength milk..(or semi-skimmed if you must!)

Cheap, available and really really works.

My vote goes to chocolate milk drinks too.
    Keebo,

  • I use the High 5 Protein Recovery drink and Powerbar protein recovery bars. The H5 can be easily mixed with either water or milk. SIS Rego makes a very nice drink but I find it difficult to mix. If you don't want to go to the expense of specialist recovery drinks then just try milk shakes. As an alternative, you could also try H5 4:1 which is a mix of carbohydrate and whey protein and is designed to be drunk during - as well as after - exercise. Some people don't like it so worth trying before you buy but I use it all the year round.
  • I've always used SIS Rego cos it tastes great. As mentioned chocolate milkshake is thought to have good recovery benefits.

I'm sure that I read something about a scientific study done looking into the benefits of drinking chocolate milkshake as a recovery drink - it might even have been on the bikeradar website main pages where I read it - and it was concluded that it does work as a post-exercise recovery drink as per results in trials using placebos and chocolate milkshake. Not sure how much you can read into this, for all we know it may have been Nesquik who funded the 'research'!

  • A tip. If you use powdered stuff, buy yourself a cheap hand blender. I'm sure i've seen them for around a fiver in Tesco. Gives Rego the consistency of emulsion (when mixed with milk -overkill?), but actually quite drinkable. You can, of course, use the blender to make delicious soups and other culinary delights too!

Try this (one of my faves). Chopped banana., strawberries/raspberries/anything. Mash with blender. Half a pint or more of milk. Enormous dollop of natural yoghurt and a big squirt of runny honey. Blend and drink. Probably not very scientific, but mighty tasty.

Sorry Andy. Should read previous posts firsts. Just got back from a good ride and was still buzzing.
    Great minds, etc....

Another vote for SIS Rego. Make it up the night before and leave it in the fridge all night. If your taking the car to a particular destination take it in a cool bag and it will be nice and cold when you finish your run.

Lots of different ideas here - chemicals, real food etc - all good but I would like to add that if you want to lose weight you have to be a bit careful with the extras in life and this includes carb/ carb & protein drinks. Make sure you don't end up consuming more energy/kcal than you need - even on 150 miles a week its quite easy to do!
For this reason although the shop bought stuff is convenient etc I'd go for real food. A sarnie with some lean meat or fish, a piece of fruit and a glass of milk will be much more satisfying than a chemical emulsion and you'll get the benefit of vitamins and trace elements from 'real' sources.
    Good luck!

Yebbut, it costs around £16/kg, may have aspartame/sucralose/saccharine and gives most people a windy bottom

Make your own from whey/maltodextrine/dextrose at a cost of around £5/kg-I flavour mine with natural vanilla, chocolate, or banana

Taking some in a cold box is an excellent idea, and taken at the end of a sportive, really does aid recovery

Lastly, it also helps me stop post ride pig out

    At last!

    Check-out the article in C+.

Milk really works. Also has the added benefit of Satiety which stops you having the munchies and devouring half a candy store before you can get a proper meal.

Frankly for us mortals if you're using more than a milkshake + a banana post ride IMO you're wasting your money.

Agreed. Which is exactly what I suggesed last week. Replace your carbs, chuck in a bit of protein and don't over do.

Everything else is mostly just marketing.

I also use their energy drink for riding.
If you can be bothered making your own and buying raw components its even cheaper.

    Hi.
If you want to achieve weight loss and do not race I am not convinced you actually need recovery drinks, though Andy's choice of banana yoghurt and semi skimmed milk sounds a good and cheap option. Forget all the expensice sis and Hi5 ones, not required.
You could also try web sites, one states all you need for rides and recovery is mixture of diluted orange drink with a bit of salt.I only use recovery drinks after a really hard or long ride, not after every ride or I tend to put weight on :D

I thought that rego stuff was bloody disgusting. Just ask your better half to make some beans on toast while you're in the shower.

Have ot say..been doing a few miles lately in prep for e2e...and can't beat 2 heaped tablespoons of nesquik (good source of lecithin) and 3/4 pint of skimmed milk. Tubs of recovery drinks are a waste of money and plastic.

SIS ReGo does nothing for me and doesn't taste good.

I also use http://www.myprotein.co.uk/formulas/our-formulas/recovery/ tastes loads better and I do recover more quickly than if I hadn't. I also use their Whey when I feel I need it.

I also use my protein for energy, recovery drinks and fat mobiliser tablets.
