Tyres and chains

I have been running my unknown frame as a commuter. All has been well but for the amount of punctures with the Dura Gator Skins28's. I am now thinking of running the Marathon Plus 25c? The Gators feel nice but I need reliability. Does anyone know of a good sturdy tyre for commuting on a racer?

Also the bike is a 6 speed - what chain will I need if I replace the old one - and can you get them in stainless steel?

Sorry last one - does anyone know what dry lubricant is and where you can get it if it is any good? I don't want to to use oil as a lubricant!

    A 6 speed chain sounds about right! Probably come as 5-7 suitable.

    Michelin Krylion 25s (if you can find them in stock anywhere).

    An 8 speed chain will work with 6 or 7. All 3/32 chains are the same internal dimensions, they're just made with thinner plates to be smaller on the outside. This generally means they wear faster. That said, a gold plated £120 chain may still not be the best deal :wink:

    A guy in our MTB club bought a £45 stainless chain for his Singlespeed. It's the only chain he's ever snapped. He won't be buying another.

    Oh dear they won't take the gold one back and now the stainless steel replacement is likely to snap I think I will just stay as I am and bin the lot!

    but seriously I did see some stainless steel chains for about a tenner on ON-ONE but they were 1/8 just wondered about 6 speed availability?

    Dry lubricant? Or alternative?

    I use same (laziness, no doubt) as on the engined one - 15/40 motor oil applied sparingly with a small brush!

    Eek no! Motor oil is really unsuitable for exposed bike chains. It works really well in a sealed environment (like an engine), but on a chain, it traps muck better than almost anything else, and is really good for getting on your trousers. If you're going to use oil, really light oil, like sewing machine oil, is better, but wax lubricants are great for not getting dirt on you, and not attracting dirt to them.

    PTFE and other dry lubes are also really good for not staining your trousers, and not attracting dirt, but not so ideal in wet muddy conditions.
