Hi,

I'm looking for a decent road bike. I'm a proficent MTBer but there are few riders or trails in my area so i was thinking of getting a road bike for when im not able to get to a trial.
I was hoping that someone could suggest a bike for as little money as possible to get me started.

Halfords, Raleigh shops and decathlon probably offer the cheapest starting road bikes. Or you could investigate second hand. How tight is your budget?

  • My budget is around £250 - £300 but i might be able to go higher if there is something special.

Ah yes, the old "I can spend more if I have too"......

I'd also have a look at Dawes for that price too.

The main thing is to get one that fits and you're happy with

  • Thanks for the help.
The "old" ones are the best!

    Couple of thoughts:

    SCR 4
    Claude Butler San Remo
    Saracen Tour 07
    Dawes Giro 300
    Raleigh Airlite 200

All of these bikes are well manufactured, reliable, useable, budget bikes - in short, they're all adequate starter bikes - have a close look at all of the specs though - and take your time with it.

If you've got more funds, you could always go with something like:

    SCR 3 or 2
    Spesh Allez

Again. look at the specs closely though.

One thing you might want to consider is whether you'll be happy on a 53/39 Double, or whether to get a bike with a 50/34 Compact from the start - plenty of threads on this.
