just get yourself an OS map and get up close and personal with nature. pick your own route - most fun!

I did this route as my first venture off road the other week and I thought it was great, not sure if it's what you're after though.http://www.flattyresmtbroutes.com/GrizedaleParkamoor.html

I can let you have PDF maps of two or three corking routes based around Coniston if you'll PM me your e-mail address.

The Old Man is completely off-limits for bikes - all the tracks are footpaths. The only exception is Walna Scar road, which is an absolute blinder of a route but it is VERY hard work and the climb up from Seathwaite to the top of the ridge is all but unrideable unless you are VERY fit and/or obscenely talented. It's also a route not to be tackled unless you're completely self-sufficient and comfortable in mountain terrain.

^^ I can second the Walna Scar route as he dragged me round it at Easter. The up is a major push and the down is somewhat scary fun  The bits in between were pretty good too from Torver over to Seathwaite had everything.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

You went voluntarily, there was no dragging involved! In fact it was you that suggested it!

And I've not been right since (mind you there's a lot that would say that I wasn't right before but that's another story)!

Seriously I've had proper, real-deal flu for about a fortnight, I'm only just starting to feel about normal. Rode about 5 miles on Monday and nearly killed me... :(

You're very close to Grizedale which is an excellent trail cente. Try the north Face route and i'd recommmend the extension into open country which will give you great views over Conniston Water (assuming it isn't raining :P )

i'm going to be riding in Grizedale/ Coniston in September. It's part of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association challenge day. Don't suppose anyone knows what route they use? I want to try and ride it before the day if possible. It's supposed to be 18km long.

No, but i would guess it would be the North Face trail with maybe a bit added here and there

As it's the guide dogs challenge, shouldn't they be wanting to find out the route? then they can guide the riders round!

Yeah I guess I'll have to wait then or I could be deemed to be cheating. :o
