I am visiting Mallorca with work for a few days later this month and have an afternoon of free time.

A mate and I are going to hire a couple of bikes and fancy tackling the above climb (we are staying in Portopetro).

Has anyone been up this? I believe its about 5km long and tops out at about 500m?

Cheers

Rich

  • Have ridden many times, its a wonderful climb, except it only goes up, then you have to come back down the way you came, so its not one you can realy do en route to somewhere else

Has a variety of long drags at the bottom, leading to many hairpins and sweeps higher up. If I recall it takes about 15-20 mins to climb

At the top their is an old monastery with a cafe. Be warned, if the weather is a bit dodgy it can get quite misty at the top, and the cafe is an old stone building which doesn't ever seem to warm up, so take something to keep yourself warm at the top if you're stopping

The view on a clear daya is fantastic, see al round the south coast of the island

We always used to ride out from Pollensa to it, climb, eat, then back, great day - have fun
  • www.sportstrainingsolutions.com maybe useful for after your ride mate

also try www.procyclehire.com for your hire bikes if you haven't sorted it

    Thanks both for your replies

Steve - that sounds just the job. We have about 3 hours riding time available so I guess we will take a route out from our hotel that takes in the climb - no problem with using the same route up / down

Velodrome - Procyclehire are sorting us out with the bikes - just need to confirm the details later this week. Sounds like I need to pack my suntan lotion!!

Well, we went out on Thursday to ride this on what was a beautiful, sunny afternoon.

It is indeed a lovely climb. As you approach the bottom you would swear there was no way up by road (I expect this is the reason a fortified monestry was originally built there?)

Just under a mile from the main road, after a gradual incline, (and after passing a siginpost: 4.8km / 6.4%), the road heads up into the trees and continues to climb up a series of really well surfaced switchbacks and hairpins all the way to the top. None of the gradients ever becomes too much (I guess a max of 8 - 10% in places?). The view as you ascend just gets better and better until you see the sign "Sant Salvador 510m" at the top of the final drag. Once there, you can see just about every corner of the Island.

What a great way to spend a January afternoon, and in work time as well!!

Well worth the visit if you are in the area. I can also recommend Procyclehire. Bruce sorted us out with a couple of great bikes and is a nice chap as well.....

    Cheers
