Trans Pennine Trail between Salford and Liverpool

I am doing the Manchester to Liverpool charity ride in July.
On the website it says : "Unsuitable for road bikes".
It uses the Trans Pennine Trail for the main part.
I ride on the TPT regularly between Stockport and Sale and I find an MTB is overall the best bet. Not sure about the other sections though.
Has anybody done this Bike ride in previous years?

Please advise.

I did it on a recumbent using marathon plus with no problems!

There are rough patches, but nothing major in good weather. In places though it is unformed path and these would be more comfortable with a bigger tyre (especially if wet and muddy) - so it would be better, but not essential.

    Whathesaid.

In the dry, the bit from Warrington to Altrincham is fine on any sort of bike if you're riding leisurely, but I wouldn't care to ride my race bike along it fast.
In the wet, the surface turns to grinding paste and I wouldn't care to ride any of my bikes aklong it.
