Hi folks,

I love mountain biking, been doing it for years but I must admit I don't know much about the mechanics of the bike. I have a Specialized Epic 2008 which I came hurtling off the other day _ i'm still hurting  . Anyway, the front rim is buckled beyond belief and I'm pretty sure it's going to need replacing.

The current rims are DT Swiss custom X420 rims and I'm struggling to find them anywhere online. Do you know of any decent rims I could replace them with?

Also, I have received advice from someone else about setting up different widths on the front and rear tyres for more stability i.e. 2.1 front 1.95 rear. Would I need different width rims?

Thanks in advance, oh and it's my first post so hello everyone!

replace with the same. take the wheel to your LBS and get them to sort it.

  • personally for any and all wheel queries I would go to Merlin and only Merlin, their wheels are legendary and they will be able to recommend a good rim choice for you.

Same problem, bent the back rim of my 2008 enduro last month and my dealer can't get a replacement, apparently specialized are all out of DT Swiss custom X420 rims and they are on back order, seems a poor service from specialized. I've got one of my spare Mavics on there at the mo but it's like wearing odd socks, don't expect to pay that much for a bike and not be able to get the parts 4 months later. :x

I managed to get a replacement 4.20 - it cost me - £55 in the end so not too harsh but still not great considering it was my second ride on the bike. While I was there one of the technical guys said he knew exactly what had happened when I came off and he was almost sure it was due to the tyres. I've purchased the maxxis high rollers and am saving for the TrailRakers for next winter.

it was only my 3rd time on the bike, i was a bit disappointed as i thought the off hardly warranted a heavily buckled rim. where did you get your new one from?

I'd buy a new fron wheel from merlin, 717 on xt with dt comps, then either keep the old hub as a spare or flog it on ebay.
