What the hell is all the sticky shit covering my shimano chain? (came with the bike)

The more I try and clean it the more dirt sticks to it :cry:

    Factory grease to stop it going rusty if it's stored in a damp warehouse on a dockside/container on a ship/cupboard at your LBS/etc before you buy it.

    Some people clean it off immediately and lube before they use it. others just use it until it wears off and then lube the chain.

    If you've got grit attached to yours so it's become abrasive, you'll have to clean off using chain cleaner, solvent, etc and then relube.
