it'd be cooler if the drive came via the wheels of the other bikes
check that;
it'd possibly be cool if the drive came via the wheels of the other bikes in such a way that some wheels turn one way, others turn the other way.

Yeah, agree. I was disappointed that it didn't work that way. Mind, imagine the rolling resistance if that was the case. And lets not even thing about getting multiple snakebites!!
