I would have to believe so in my opinion. This course is used for Pro level races

Obviously this is an impossible question for you answer without knowing the extent of my incompetence, but would there really be no point in giving it a try? Is there a good chance I would find it undrideable? Or would it just take me a very long time?

Give it a go.
Bit like thrown in at the deep end really. I can't imagine anyone will begrudge you that. As long as you enjoy yourself doing it thats what really matters.

Where do you live?

There is a race on at Newnham this weekend (17th). If you are close you could either enter it (£14 on the day, fun race iro 10 miles) and you'll get an idea of the terrain. If interested have a look on www.xcracer.com & click the Soggy Bottom link.

The first time I went round Newnham was the last Soggy Bottom race (mid Jan). I got back into MTB May / June last year (after nearly 15yrs), I'm definately not the most technically adept rider, but I really enjoyed racing Newnham.

You ain't got anything to lose entering the 50km enduro.

when you say novice :?:
the event is all about endurance 50k 30 miles or for £3 pound more the option to continue out from the cream tea tent and do another 25 miles.
This is not a race , they could not let 500 people go off the start together like they do (which is fantastic)if it was a race.
Ive done Newnham 90 twice and you get a complete cross section of riders & walkers having a great day.
if you think you can do 50k then go for it.
on the technical side you will have tree roots but your wheels will always be on the ground ,this is XC. There will be river crossings ,you could walk. The hard stuff like the "pipeline" are not included.
As you ride through the day you will gain confidence and improve , & when you finish & pull on your http://www.newnham90.com/ Tshirt you wont be a novice any more

Nope.

1) It's near Plymouth.
2) I like to enjoy MTBing not half kill myself.
3) I will probably be surfing.
4) It's near Plymouth.
5) I mostly ride from home. Sticking a bike in a car and karting it miles seems wrong to me.

I live in Plymouth, about 4 miles from Newnham. I was planning on spectating at Soggy Bottom this Sunday, but I could be up for it.

I'm a novice in the sense that I've never participated in any sort of organised MTB event before, but I'm reasonably fit and could probably manager 50k provided it isn't too technical. I suppose there's only one way to find out.

if you live that close to Newnham follow FSR-XC 's advice and do the fun ride ,sunday.
With http://www.newnham90.com/ you have all day to cover the distance.
I think they intend to ride on to lee moor, behind the clay works , where they usually have a food stop.

hi there i did my first mtb race today at newnham! i did the fun one in the morning and only had to do two laps but really enjoyed it! (didnt do very well tho!) Me and a friend were thinking of entering for the 50k in may.. but just wondered if any of you know weather the course for that will be more technical that the soggy bottom course today..... i got really scared going down the big grassy bank and had to walk down! thats embarrassing!

I think i read some where that the pipeline is not being used.
if u have raced today ,Iam sure u will manage the "non race " Newnham

The hill Hannah is talking about is on the right side of the river (as you come in), across the field from the bridge.

Have to say, as I came out of the trees up the top, it was a bit of a surprise - especially at the bottom! Plenty of run off though.

The course was reversed from when I did it in Jan (with a few extra bits - so longer too). Climbing that singletrack to the bombholes was quite kn*ckering.

I doubt the Newnham 90 will be as technical as the Soggy Bottom races. I've ridden it before and as said previously, it usually goes out around the clay works at Cadover/Cornwood.
