I'm trying to shorten my new chain, granted I'm using a cheapo chain splitter tool, but the pin is just not budging. To the extent I've bent the side plate.

Is there a certain link I have to remove, or is it just the carpy tool I'm using ?

You need a separate tool for 10 speed, any compatible ones will say it on.

    It's a 9 speed. Do I still need a dedicated 9 sp tool ?

Do you? Campag say you must use their stupidly expensive tool, but I didn't and it was fine.

Any chain tool should do the job really.

  • I've always used a regular chain tool on Shimano chains, 9 and 10 speeds, without any problems. Just remember to rejoin it with the proper connecting rivet.

It's a crappy chain tool you're using, try a different one and you'll be ok. My brother claimed once he couldn't split his chain to change it. I went down with my own chain tool, tried his, same trouble as you, tried mine, no problem.

I did this recently with the chain tool you get in the Edinburgh Bicycle cheap toolkit box thing.

It all worked fine....the chain splitter even seemed to be designed for the special joinging rivet thingys
