Folding tyre woes

Got a set of Specialized Storm tyres at Xmas.

3rd time out however and the rear is ready for the bin.

Riding today and psssssst! Ah another bl**dy puncture. On closer inspection a stone has ripped through the sidewall. Temp repair (tube rapair each side) & we're off.

Got home & had a look at the tyre. There are a couple more areas (one small rip and couple of score marks just in the rubber) where it is damaged.

Is this just bad luck or is this common on this type of tyre?

I got nothing but grief off of my old panaracer fire xc folding tyres, plenty of traction for uphills but shockingly unrelaible on the downhill.

I didn't have much luck with the specialised resolution pros that came with my stumpy. The rear tyre got replaced before Christmas as the side wall had worn through and the tube was poking out. There were several other points on the sidewall where the plys were easily visable. The front tyre isn't much better. Don't know whether this is just a problem with spesh tyres but I wouldn't buy another one (running a panaracer Trailraker 2.1 on the back and so far so good).
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

I dont think this has anything to do with the fact they fold per se (that is the beading of the tyre), but it is true to say folding tyres are sometimes made of different compounds as the price increases.

The problem is spec sheet purchasing. A tyre that is impressively light on paper is always going to be attractive but they pinch and rip much easier.

I'm debating whether to get another 'Storm' or get a set of Maxxis Swampthing 2.1 instead.

Think the Storm grips very well in the wet conditions & was still good over rocks, but would like to see a little more wear from them!!!!!

I have slashed 3 out of 4 folding tyres since I bought my bike 8 months ago! Both Specialized Resolution Pro's had slashes in the sidewalls, 1 Specialized Fast Trak took a flint through the main tyre face.

I now have a pair of Panaracer Trailrakers, also folding, so i'm just keeping my fingers crossed!

In my experience of them Specialized aren't the best at making tyres despite being extremely good at making bikes.

Folding tyres aren't a problem, I've had them for years over very rough terrain without many probs if you pick decent tyres.

Haven't had probs with WTB Motoraptors, Velociraptors or Panaracer Trailraker as a back tyre in the mud. Also Continental Vertical Protector tyres are good and offer good puncture protection.

The problem I had with Spesh tyres wasn't puncture protection, it was lack of grip causing me to crash a few times and use my body as a gravel brake after a complete washout once.
