Tyres for turbo trainer

I got a turbo trainer for christmas and have done 3 sessions on it so far. I am finding that my tyre is getting worn quickly, is this right or, more likely, am I not using the correct pressure's or something else that's basic?

I have seen that there are specialist tyres for trainers, are these worth the money?

Definitely worth it. Like you've seen the road tyres wear too quickly. I use a set of these:-

I use any old tyre that's not fit for the road any more. This is made easier by having a 'turbo-bike' permanently set up on the turbo. If you don't have a bike that can live on the turbo permanently then maybe you could use an old wheel/tyre combo that you can swap over on your road bike when it goes on the turbo?

I use the conti trainer tyre - I'm expecting it to last for ever as I have no visible wear in 1 year of use with 2-3 sessions every week.

2nd vote for conti trainer tyre, seems indestructable.

I have mine on an old rim and just swap the back wheel out.

old tyre or cheap one - check correct inflation often too. Don'twang up the tension too much either - pedal smoothly :)

    Hi there.

Yup - exactly what I do. I've got an old back wheel that has too many dings in the rim to tide it on the road, plus a never ending supply of old race tyres with cuts in them. Don't really see the point in buying the conti turbo-specific tyre. No matter how good a product it is, it's just not necessary.

    Cheers, Andy

Those using the conti trainer tyre, can you comment on noise levels? One of the benefits is supposed to be a quiter session... useful for people without a garage ;)

  • Thanks for the advice. Being a newcomer I don't have a spare wheel or old tyres to use.

Seems like I may be investing in the Conti, any ideas if it does cut the noise levels down?

I don't think it makes any difference with noise.

My tyres tended to delaminate and I was forever changing it, just got a pita. I suspect it was just the tyre I was using.

Tacx do a turbo tyre too.

Mine's done about 2000 miles and still going strong.

It's not nearly as noisy as a normal tyre though it can get a bit squeaky if you have it on too tight agaist the rollers.
