Where do I start with this bunch?
Education? Wasn't this one of Teflon Tony's biggies? And what have they done apart from debased exams, conned thousands of youngsters that the debt they've got into by going to 3rd rate universities offering 4th rate degrees in unwanted subjects will be worthwile in the long run, whilst also creating an underclass of unemployed and unemployable living on crime and state handouts!
The armed-forces?, which they've thrust into every political good cause going, whilst not providing them with the equipment to do it properly, going along with equipment programmes that aren't necessary or that could be obtained both better and at lower cost from other countries outside Europe, because they're sucking-up to the EU!
Wasn't this the lot who were so critical of the Major administration and "sleaze", demanding (Rightly!) the resignation of those who broke the laws, who're now up to their necks in crooked money and won't abide by their promises to sack those who are dishonest!
Who want to offer the vote to 16 year olds, because too few people are voting and it's affecting democracy?, when a promised referendum on the European Constitution was never held, because they realised it was unwinnable and so Teflon Tony would never get his desire of being President of Europe!
The NHS, weren't there just 24hours to save it? and they've done little apart from employ thousands of managers who do sod all, apart from sit in meetings all day and provide a gerimandered source of votes!
Energy? we're facing an energy crisis, which they've finally woking up to, after selling off our nuclear industry and going along with the left-wing crack pots who think that covering the countryside with turbines will solve our problems, because they were too shit scared of confronting them with the real facts aboutthe economics of energy and thus losing votes.
The country? split up into feuding chunks, stealthily tried to introduce regional government to go along with EU plans, refusal to answer The West Lothian Question, because it would mean that they'd lose power and jobs for the boys?
Europe? This would rate a whole library of space to cover adequately, we've had laws thrust onto us, 80% of our legislation is now handed down from the EU, it can't be thrown out by our own Parliament, it can't even be amended by it. No criticism is allowed of this, if you do, you're a "Europhobe"or "Eurosceptic".
Our system of goverment? They've torn apart a system that's worked for hundreds of years, taking away the House of Lords, trying to neuter it and then not having the guts to put anything in its place.
Please add more examples as you see fit.
Remember that you are an Englishman and thus have won first prize in the lottery of life.

If Hain had been a Tory he would have been out by now!

As it is I don' think thatthere is anything that could force a Labour Minister to resign.

At least the Tories did something about "sleaze", this Government is far more dirty, but simply hides the fact under spin.

  • Don't forget engineering a house price explosion that's now verging on financial ruin.

It seems all politicians are plebs actually. This is why no one votes.

Lower voting to 16 - ha they are still children they don't even have responsibility for themselves let alone others. Raise it! Not 18, not even 21, look to 25 when people have left uni and begin to know what the world really is.

Edit - If the age to vote is ever lowered to 16 we will never see the end of labour. Its fashionable amongst younger people because they see them as nice and teachers are notoriously left wing and can influence their minds easily. It would be a perversion of democracy.

What I always wonder about the English School system is if it really is the mess it looks from North of the Border.

In fact a few things you rant about don't matter a monkeys to me at General Election time because I know that there is a a different bunch of monkeys in control of them.

The commons is in a bit of a mess now that certain parts of their competence have been removed. It's bloody stupid that Scottish, Welsh and NI politicians can vote on matters that affect only England. Of course that's the basis of the West Lothian Question and the answer to it is a fairly significant change in the Commons.

Having a dislike of hereditry powers I would happily see the Lords replaced as the main chamber for the UK and the commons become the house that deals with England only matters. Though really it is just one way of trying to polish a turd and I'm sure I can think of better ways of political representation without too much effort.

isn't the point of the house of lords that they are experts in their fields and know when something could ecconomically wreak havoc? and their job to stop it?

i've not voted for a few years now as i'm not in one place long enough to vote in any one part of the uk other than postal vote at my parent's

but then, i have no idea who to vote for, as personally I feel they're all as bad as each other and there's only really one party going to win until people get bored of them (labour's time may be up next election) we'll see

    Adam.......you whinging pom!!
Maybe minimum wage, cold weather payments, massive investment in schools and hospitals, low unemployment and a sparkling ecomomy don't mean much to you, they certainly do to me!!
I'm old enough to remember the last lot.
Both working, two Holiday's a year, kids doing well. I'll have a bit more of this thanks.

I do remember the last lot! We had both of us working, two holidays a year and a sparkling econmoy and low unemployment. I saw new hospitals being built and old ones improved.
The only amazing thing about this bunch are that they've taken 10 years to screw up the economy!
As for masive investments, we haven't got much out of it, hospital waiting lists are down, I'll grant you, but what a mess of the Drs' training scheme, schools? Numberspassing exams are up, but the schooo leavers are less numerate and literate, what does that tell you? and as for lower unemployment, add the massive numbers claiming invalidity benefit for their chronic idleitis and there's a fairer estimate of the true numbers whoare unemployed.
Good job we've had 750,000 East Europeans come to do the dirty jobs that our skiving underclass can't be bothered to get out of bed and do.
Sparkling economy? Built on borrowed money, after years of good growth our national debt should have been reduced drastically, not increased.
They've just chucked billions at Northern Rock, billions that will never be recovered and hundreds of thouands of small shareholders will lose everything when it's nationalised.
The first run on a bank for 125 years?
Not only do I remember the last lot, I remember the lot before tem, the "glory days" of Labour under such luminaries as Callaghan, Foot & that Welsh Cnut Kinnock, who's now sponging on our tax money doing a European sinecure. I remember Wilson too, Dennis Healey going cap in hand to the IMF, I remember the lights going out under Heath, when he failed to succesfully challenge the Unions. We can thank "The Last Lot" for finally kicking them into touch, you might note that Labour haven't ressurrected the "rights" that Mrs T removed from the likes of Scargill (I miss him, no one to hurl things at the TV for these days, even that tosser in charge of the RMT doesn't raise my hackles that far)
And yes Mr Wallace, it is as bad! Even your illustrious forebearer William wouldn't want to invade now.

The country gets the government it deserves. "They" merely reflect "our" prejudices and wishes. How many vote for those who promise a more difficult life? Or higher taxes for them as individuals?
I rather think that knowing the future is truly awful, "government" and "people" have entered into an unspoken and implicit pact based on eat, drink and be merry because tomorrow...is too awful to contemplate.

    low unemployment

Hmmm, I keep wondering how can this be when we are told how 81% of jobs are being taken by migrant workers. What are all the school leavers doing? But employment is always expressed as a percentage of the population. As people are flocking to our shores and being employed the percentage of unemployed out of the increasing population either goes down or remains the same even though the absolute figure may remain the same or increase.

I have to say that as I read Adams critique through I found myself nodding to all of it. We may be well of in some ways but our education and national health system are now so badly underfunded and screwed up that they will never recover.
This country is now as corrupt as the rest of Europe. The only difference is we have made an art of making it look legitimate

I've never voted in nearly 40 years and I doubt now that I will vote once in my lifetime unless some party comes along with a manifesto that reflects what this country wants and needs.

I read tonight that we are about to build new homes for 2 million immigrants ?

what about housing for all the young natives that can't afford a new home.!

grrrr don't get me started on immigration policies

    Nope,

The job of the House of Lords or members of the house of lords is either to be born into the position and know bugger all or to be appointed for good behaviour by the government. In reality they have bugger all ability to stop the Common from getting something in front of Quenie who of course doesn't use her power to stop a bill thus making her hereditary position pointless and useless as well.

Even though I largely dislike hereditary power this is one power I really think the hereditary people in power need to use. The alternative is riots, strikes, rebellion or even revolution but these days the Police and Military have so much firepower that any attempt even by a majority to fight the system is likely to result in a Tijanamen Square style disaster.

Peanut imo there are three factors that have lead to the current price of houses.

    1. More demand than supply has generated an upward force for prices. It does not set the price however just gives it a direction.

    2. Removing house prices from the measure of inflation. This removes the limit that prices can rise to. If they were a factor in inflation then interest rates would have risen to curb their inflation.

    3. Oodles of easy money. This is the factor that sets the level they will rise to once the limits have been removed. If you can only get your hands on x amount of money then you can only pay x for a house. If you can get more then you can bid higher. Asking prices will rise accordingly.

One of those three factors has already been removed. Easy money. If 2 million new homes are built then the supply demand factor will also go and house prices will come down.

This is a problem for those people who have taken advantage of easy money and borrowed 6 times their salaries to get 110% mortgages. They will be in negative equity and if they were interest only mortgages then they are F U K T ed.

However there are many boasts made by the government about building houses but they have never achieved any of them.

With the level of debt people want interest rates to go down but there will be a double dose of inflation as the pound sinks while we are a net importer of almost everything. Even our workforce is imported! We've been borrowing money from everyone and spending it on their goods. That's an economy that shines like a polished t u r d.

  • Another here who doesn't bother to vote for the parish council in Westminster. They have no power, and our masters in Brussels are unelected corrupt liars, so why bother?

"and our masters in Brussels are unelected corrupt liars, so why bother?"

I'm not sure that you totally understand the structures and functioning of "Brussels". Our masters in Brussels are essentially the same as here (Council of Ministers): if you don't vote in our "parish" elections, then clearly you cannot complain about EU actions.

One way in which the UK is at a disadvantage results from our reluctance to second Civil Servants to the Directirates. Many permanent Commission staff come from the secondees - and so we have relatively few UK citizens moving up the ranks to Cabinet jobs within the important Directorates.

And, no, I am not at heart pro-EU (I voted against in '74 or whenever and some 9 years of close working with some Directorates did not convince me that I was wrong so to do).

  • The '74 vote was whether or not to stay in the "European Economic Community"
That was a little organisation that was supposed to promote free-trade. Not this dictatorship of corruption that's failed to have it's accounts passed by the official auditors for 13 years!

That was a little organisation that was supposed to promote free-trade. Not this dictatorship of corruption that's failed to have it's accounts passed by the official auditors for 13 years!

If thought that that was the raison d'etre of the "EEC", then clearly never read the Treaties and the intentions (plain enough) of the "founding fathers".

The accounts fail to be passed for two reasons: 1. the Commission has a VERY stringent interpretation of "irregularities" and 2. most of the records which form the basis of the Audit are those of/held by the Member States (and often those of the recipients of the grant-in-aid). These are often woefully lacking (and yes reflect corruption in some member states).

I have hard times at the hands of EU Auditors!

Whatever the failings (and I agree that they are many) of the EU, its prime purpose has been met. We have NOT had millions killed in pointless warfare between those countries which created it (or at least like the UK gave it a fair wind) since 1945. That should not I think be either discounted or disparaged.
