On the subject of a new bike, what would you recommend for a maximum budget of £1000?

I am after a light hardtail capable of off road as well as some road riding. Lock out forks are important as well as a light frame.

In my intitial search i got it down to a Focus Raven, Merida matts tfs 900-d and a Marin Eldridge Grade. Would you recommend any of these bikes as better than the others and are there any alternatives that you would suggest?

Many thanks, NCJ

Try a specialized rockhopper pro . Had the choice between the rockhopper and the marin
the marin is a nice bike with better spec but slightly dearer price . but the marin is way heavier than the specialized so went for that one .
  • You might want to consider two others:

Rock Lobster Team Tig from Merlin Cycles (voted best £1000 hardtail for the last four years in What MTB Magazine).

The other bike you might want to look at is the Chris Boardman MTB Pro model (available in Halfords) which is incredibly well specced for its price.

    Happy hunting.
