Where to go training in March?

I'm about to book a weeks training somewhere warm at the beginning of March. I've narrowed in down to three choices:

1. Costa Blanca, somewhere between Alicante and Denia. I've been out there before and loved the area, found it great for training on the roads, and it's the cheapest option.

2. Tenerife. Never been before but the weather in March seems more reliable and there's plenty of climbs.

3. Majorca. Again, never been before but it's the cycling isle isn't it? So I'm sure the roads and terrain are great for training on. The one thing I'm not sure is whether the weather is likely to be ok in March. I believe last year there was snow in March!

I'd be grateful for any thoughts and recommendations. As I've never been to Tenerife or Majorca, where would make a base, any places to avoid, etc?

I went to Majorca in Apr this year and had stunning weather. However, according to the locals it had been poor weather until then. Mar may be cool. The cycling was simply excellent. We had a mixed ability group and the range of flat and mountains with interesting and attractive villages made for an excellent week. It was one of the best cycling holiday locations we have been to. We stayed in Puerto Pollensa. But like you, we are discussing with friends as to where to go. Our current list options is Majorca, Alicante or Canary Islands with Italy running as an outside bet.
  • The weather in Tenerife should be nice and pleasant at this time of year but you will have to like climbing as most of the island is quite mountainous.
Try www.tenerife-training.net for lots of info. regarding cycling in Tenerife.

We have toured Majorca in March. It was windy with some wet days to start with but generally warm enough for shorts. I think it's pot luck! Lots of cyclists out training.

You mention Cost Blanca. I went with this lot earlier this year. Basically a guy that owns a bungalow and cycles a lot. However he picks you up from the airport and rides with you each day. Also quite cheap, decent cycling and reasonable accommodation..

As Videoman said if you go to Tenerife then prepare for some serious sh*t...the climb upto Teide would probably be more bearable than the 30oC when I did it but its still a monster...40km without any let up whatsoever...not exaclt training!...more like you should train for this...the Teno mountains and the Anaga mountains are better training areas..the Teno range are magnificent....the valley of Masca is the loveliest place ive ever seen...the climbs are VERY steep....the Anaga Mountains are supposedly outsanding aswell....personally I'd choose Tenerife over Majorca as its better climate in March and you would have a ball in the Teno and Anaga ranges...try Teide if you want but I found it tougher than Ventoux/Tourmalet/Galibier etc....
  • Thanks for the replies everyone. I've decided to head out to the Costa Blanca for various reasons. Tenerife for me next year though I think! :D

I did it twice last week ... from los gigantes ... the second time time-trialing up it for 39km to 1900m, turning the bike round straight away and back down to the swimming pool and a late morning espresso!

the views and quiet 5% ish moutain roads are just amazing.

Depends what you mean by kid friendly Toonraid.
Our hotel is family friendly, the garden is great and enclosed. The beach and childrens' play park are 1 minute walk away.

Drop me a line if you want me to send you our road cycling mini-brochure, or if you have any questions.

  • Been in Mallorca now for 10days and really loving it. The weather has been great on the whole and the routes to cycle are fantastic!

I thoroughly recommend using Mallorca (in particular Pto Pollenca) as a destination for your spring training.
